个人简介
In my research, I focus on developing methodologies to improve the efficacy of Natural Language Processing in low-resource languages and settings. To this end, I specialize in unsupervised/semisupervised machine learning, multilingual language modeling, and cross-lingual transfer. Specific tasks to which I have applied these techniques include (unsupervised) Machine Translation, unsupervised morphological segmentation, and cross-lingual Natural Language Inference (NLI). Recent projects of mine include:
Improving upon unsupervised translation baselines using Emergent Communication as a training signal
Conducting zero- and few-shot crosslingual transfer of a morpheme-segmentation model into extremely low-resource languages
Developing models for completely unsupervised morpheme segmentation
Investigating language-wise representation alignment in crosslingual language models
Investigating the effect of various segmentation schemes as input to low-resource Machine Translation
I aim for the research I conduct to not just advance linguistic science, but also aid in the concrete task of language revitalization among groups who have experienced attrition of their native language due to colonialism and related influences. It is my hope that NLP can be a tool to help Indigenous communities reclaim their languages by making technology-based language-learning easy and accessible for both students and teachers.
