The research interest of Professor Ma consists in the development of novel, highly functional materials and structures on the nanometer scale targeted at various biomedical and energy applications, such as long-term tracking of biological processes, catalysis and photovoltaics. Specifically, the main thrusts are centered on six topics:
Synthesis, characterization, surface modification and biomedical applications of highly luminescent and stable nanoparticles, particularly, near infrared-emitting quantum dots
Investigation of surface chemistry and surface-property relationship of laser fabricated nanoparticles
Development of novel nano- complexes for the detection of virus cellular trafficking
Novel solar cells based on the nanohybrids of quantum dots and high-mobility 1-dimensional structures (such as carbon nanotubes and TiO2 nanobelts)
Design and realization of new high-efficiency, low-cost transition metal nanoparticle catalysts
Synthesis, characterization, surface modification and biomedical applications of multifunctional nanoparticles, which integrate superparamagnetic and luminescent components into a single nano-architecture
