RESEARCH INTERESTS & PROJECTS
The Cardiopulmonary Laboratory for Experimental and Applied Physiology studies how the respiratory, cardiovascular, and autonomic nervous systems interact to control blood flow and ventilation in health and disease. An important facet of Dr. Foster’s research program is the combination of physiological research and biomedical engineering to create new technologies that innovate future research and improve patient diagnostics and treatments. The laboratory is currently focused on:
The influence of intermittent hypoxia and sleep apnea on cardiovascular, respiratory, and autonomic function.
Pulmonary vascular regulation and intrapulmonary shunt at high altitude and during exercise.
Coronary blood flow regulation
Muscle and tissue perfusion measured by contrast enhanced ultrasound
The lab receives funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
