Troubling Tradition, Community, and Self-Reliance: Reframing Expectations for Village Seed Banks

•We present a qualitative case study of village seed banks in Telangana, India.•Tradition, community, and self-reliance narratives limited seed bank effectiveness.•Farmers did not inherently prefer traditional seed exchange practices.•An interrogative approach moves from critiquing to contextualizing narratives.
