Global 10-m impervious surface area mapping: A big earth data based extraction and updating approach

•A big Earth data based impervious surface area extraction and update method was proposed.•Two global 10-m impervious surface area maps for 2015 and 2018 were generated.•Total area of global impervious surfaces increased from ∼ 1.27 to ∼ 1.29 million km2.•Our products can accurately provide more spatial details at a finer resolution.•Our products will facilitate the Sustainable Development Goals related applications.
