Segmental precast technology can accelerate bridge construction and has received more attention in bridge industry. However, the impact of interface joints on seismic performance should be evaluated if precast piers are used in rail transit viaduct. A seismic vulnerability assessment method for precast piers is proposed, in which displacement ductility is selected as the evaluation parameter, vulnerability analysis is conducted by probabilistic seismic demand model, and four ultimate damage states are defined to quantitatively evaluate the damage of the concrete bridge piers. Taking the precast piers in the Nanjing Ningju inter-city rail transit as the background, comparative studies on seismic vulnerability of cast-in-place, precast, and precast prestressed pier are carried out in this paper. Theoretical and experimental studies show that prestressing tendon can reduce the vulnerability of precast piers, and the ones with higher axial prestressed pressure in a certain range are more likely to survive in strong earthquake. The presented findings can provide additional input for the design of precast bridge piers in medium to high intensity seismic area.
