The leading data analytics tool in the cement industry is a spreadsheet, but there is an opportunity to improve productivity and replace it with an advanced analytics application. Spreadsheets are difficult to use for process data because volume is big, sensors are many, and time-series data has noise and dropouts. Spreadsheets exacerbate these because the onus of organizing and cleaning the data is put on the end user. This paper describes how a cement producer implemented an advanced analytics application to provide positive business results for problems common to the industry: root cause analysis, production reports, quality modeling, and predictive maintenance.
TiB2 particulate levels ranging from 0.1 to 4.6 volume percent were incorporhted into the near-gamma titanium aluminide alloy Ti-47.5Al-2Nb-2Mn (at%) via the XD™ process. Material was prepared by Vacuum ArcRemelting (VAR) followed by investment casting into cylindrical bars. Results show that grain refinement occurs in alloys with XD™ TiB additions equal to or greater than 1.0 volume percent. Alloys with ad itions of less than 1.0 volume percent TiB2 contained boride phases having lacey and blocky morphologies. Alloys with additions of 1.0 volume percent TiB2 or greater contained needle shaped borides, blocky equiaxed borides and lacey borides. Determination of boride phase morphology, boride type and microstructural response were determined by backscattep electron imaging (BEI), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical metallography.
Sharp photoluminescence from the intra-4f shell of Er3+ is observed from erbium doped AlxGa1-xAs (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The intensity of the luminescence from the erbium is strongly dependent on the aluminum composition with a maximum at x = 0.6. We will present a model that explains the variation in intensity based on the energy transfer coupling efficiency between the host semiconductor and the optically active erbium ions. The coupling efficiency is dominated by the alignment or misalignment of the erbium energy levels with the energy bands of the host semiconductor and by the excess carrier lifetime in the host. The data and model, which are presented here for the first time, are consistent with our previous work on the effects of co-doping with Be or Si and with other workers' measurements of thermal quenching in rare earth doped semiconductors.

An engineering procedure for estimating the effects of asymmetric lee side vortices on slender missile configurations is described. A computerized model is used which incorporates both theoretical and empirical bases. Vortex locations and strengths are defined on mainly empirical grounds. Forces and moments are calculated from potential flow considerations. The procedure may be applied to bodies with or without tails. Among the effects calculable are: induced side forces, yawing moments, tail forces, and rolling moments. Comparisons between predicted and experimental effects are shown. Procedure accuracy is generally suitable for preliminary design purposes.
