Soil erosion threatens global land and water resources, underscoring the need for effective vegetation restoration strategies. However, the quantitative effects and mechanisms through which vegetation structure, spatial patterning, and coverage regulate runoff and soil loss dynamics remain inadequately quantified. This study combined controlled rainfall experiments with structural equation modeling (SEM) to assess how vegetation structure (forest, shrub, grassland), spatial position (upslope, downslope), and coverage (60%-80%) influence erosion processes. Results demonstrated that shrub communities most effectively mitigated runoff and soil loss, outperforming both forests and grasslands. Downslope vegetation placement consistently surpassed upslope arrangements in reducing erosion, and coverage exceeding 70% emerged as a critical threshold for optimal effectiveness. SEM analysis revealed that soil properties were the primary mediators explaining vegetation's erosion-reduction effects. These findings challenge afforestation-centered restoration paradigms in Loess Plateau, highlighting the superiority of strategically designed shrub-based systems. By integrating artificial rainfall experiments with causal modeling, this work advances precision restoration strategies for global erosion-prone ecosystems, addressing escalating climate-driven hydrological extremes and land degradation.
The measurement and study of the mechanical properties of minerals hold significant theoretical and engineering value. Due to the irregular shape and high cost of high-purity mineral samples, it is difficult to produce standard specimens for mechanical testing, which necessitates exploring new methods to improve the research on mineral mechanics. Nanoindentation testing, characterized by small sample volume and non-destructive testing, can be used to determine the micro-mechanical properties of minerals at the nanoscale. (1) In this study, load-displacement curves were obtained for five minerals-dolomite, albite, sodalite, calcite, and malachite-through nanoindentation testing. Statistical analysis of the nanoindentation results revealed that the elastic modulus of dolomite is 124.32 +/- 6.58 GPa, with a hardness of 4.58 +/- 0.42 GPa. Albite has an elastic modulus of 77.83 +/- 5.74 GPa and a hardness of 7.54 +/- 1.22 GPa. Sodalite's elastic modulus is 75.65 +/- 3.45 GPa, with a hardness of 6.58 +/- 0.36 GPa. Calcite's elastic modulus is 72.00 +/- 6.48 GPa, with a hardness of 1.71 +/- 0.30 GPa, while malachite's elastic modulus is 84.03 +/- 10.91 GPa, with a hardness of 2.40 +/- 0.68 GPa. (2) Through theoretical derivation and fitting of experimental results, it was found that there is a clear linear positive correlation between the elastic modulus and hardness at different test points within the same mineral. (3) The experimental data was analyzed using the Weibull distribution, and by comparing the Weibull modulus, the microstructural uniformity order of the five minerals is as follows: sodalite > dolomite > albite > calcite > malachite. (4) By comparing the creep depth of the samples under different peak loads, the order of the creep properties of the five minerals was determined as follows: albite > sodalite > malachite > dolomite > calcite. Nanoindentation technology provides an efficient and accurate method for studying the micro-mechanical properties of minerals.
BACKGROUND:Bovine mastitis is a major inflammatory disease that impairs mammary epithelial function, milk production, and animal health. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in many physiological and pathological processes, but their roles in pathogen-induced bovine mammary epithelial dysfunction remain unclear. AIM:This study aimed to identify mastitis-associated circRNAs and determine whether circPRIM2 regulates mammary epithelial cell proliferation, β-casein secretion, and inflammatory responses. METHODS:An inflammatory model was established in bovine mammary alveolar cell-T (MAC-T) cells by heat-inactivated Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli stimulation. circRNA profiles were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatic prediction. The stability and function of circPRIM2 were further validated by RNase R digestion, RT-qPCR, CCK-8, EdU, Western blot, and ELISA assays. RESULTS:A total of 5043 circRNAs were identified in S. aureus-treated MAC-T cells, and 31 circRNAs were differentially expressed between S. aureus-treated and control cells. circPRIM2, a novel circRNA derived from the PRIM2 locus, was down-regulated under inflammatory conditions and resistant to RNase R digestion. circPRIM2 overexpression reduced MAC-T cell viability and EdU incorporation, increased β-casein expression and secretion, and decreased LTA-induced TNF-α and IL-1β secretion as well as p65 phosphorylation. CONCLUSION:These findings suggest that circPRIM2 may act as an epithelial regulatory circRNA linking cell growth, secretory function, and immune response during bovine mastitis. This study provides a basis for further exploring circPRIM2 as a potential biomarker or molecular target for mastitis management.
This study aims to understand the status of depression and anxiety among Chinese university students through epidemiological investigation of a large sample size and provide a foundation for identifying individuals at risk of psychological crisis and developing targeted intervention strategies. Survey participants were selected using a multi-stage sampling approach, which incorporated elements of stratification and cluster sampling. The main participants consisted of 49,717 university students from 106 Chinese universities. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess depression and anxiety levels retrospectively. Of the 49,717 questionnaires collected, 41,620 were deemed valid after a rigorous data cleaning process, resulting in a validity rate of 83.7
This study investigated the microbial community composition and structure in healthy and diseased rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) root systems, examining both root tissue and rhizosphere environments. Alpha diversity analysis revealed significantly higher microbial abundance in the rhizosphere compared to root tissues, with notable differences between healthy and diseased plants. Principal coordinate analysis demonstrated that bacterial community composition was primarily influenced by ecological niches (47.5% variation explained), whereas fungal communities segregated based on plant health status. Network analysis revealed increased bacterial community complexity in diseased plants rhizosphere (579 nodes, 13,016 edges) compared to healthy plants (542 nodes, 8700 edges), while fungal networks showed opposite trends with significant reduction in diseased conditions (147 nodes, 30 edges vs. 205 nodes, 418 edges). Correlation analysis identified significant associations between specific microbial taxa and soil properties, with notable positive correlations between certain bacteria (Oscillospirales) and fungi (Barnettozyma, Mortierella) with soil organic matter and nutrient availability. Pathogenic taxa, including Fusarium and members of Burkholderiales, showed negative correlations with beneficial microorganisms, suggesting potential antagonistic relationships. These findings provide crucial insights into the complex interactions within the rhubarb root microbiome and their implications for plant health, contributing to our understanding of root rot disease dynamics and potential management strategies.
