1One Question, Many Reviews: Practical Typology and Decision Guide for Psychiatrists and Psychologists
    Seyyed Muhammad Mahdi Mahdavinoor

SUMMARY Synthesising research evidence is a cornerstone of evidence-based health sciences, playing a critical role in guiding research, practice and policy. Understanding the differences and similarities among the wide variety of review approaches is essential for selecting the most appropriate. This article discusses ten of the most common review types in psychiatric and psychological research: narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, umbrella reviews, network meta-analyses, meta-epidemiological studies, scoping reviews, mapping reviews, rapid reviews and state-of-the-art reviews. For each type, its purpose, function, distinctions and practical examples are described, offering a clearer picture of its role and application. The article emphasises that no single type is inherently superior; rather, the suitability of a given method depends on the research question, the state of the evidence and practical constraints. These explanations are intended not only to support novice researchers who may lack familiarity with review methodologies but also to assist more experienced scholars in avoiding common mistakes when selecting and applying review approaches.

2Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of Traumatic Brain Injury
    Nuwan Galappathie

SUMMARY This article gives an overview of the most common neuropsychiatric sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and discusses new perspectives on terminology for describing persisting symptoms after concussion. Psychiatrists may encounter patients who have sustained TBIs in a variety of settings, including in the out-patient clinic, in-patient services and when preparing expert psychiatric reports, especially in personal injury cases. TBI is a medical condition diagnosed by a brain injury expert such as a neurologist, neuropsychologist, neuropsychiatrist or neurosurgeon. Neuropsychiatric sequelae may occur following TBI and affect prognosis and treatment needs. This article explores the causes of TBI, its clinical presentation and guidelines for grading severity and considers the neuropsychiatric sequelae that can occur, including persisting symptoms after concussion.

3Transference and Countertransference in Clinical Supervision: Relational and Ethical Perspective on Practice and Professional Development
    Sewanu Awhangansi

SUMMARY Clinical supervision is a cornerstone of mental health practice and professional development, yet the relational dynamics underpinning supervision are often underexamined. This article explores the roles of transference and countertransference within the supervisor–supervisee relationship and their implications for learning, evaluation, professional development and patient care. Drawing on contemporary literature, it argues that these processes are not merely obstacles to effective supervision but valuable sources of insight into both clinical and supervisory relationships. The article examines how transference may influence supervisees’ perceptions of authority, feedback and evaluation, and how countertransference can shape supervisors’ judgements, emotional responses and decision-making. Particular attention is given to the effects of power differentials, cultural influences and organisational contexts. The risks associated with unrecognised relational dynamics, including non-disclosures by supervisees, bias, weakened supervisory alliances and compromised clinical decision-making, are critically discussed. Finally, evidence-informed approaches for managing these processes are outlined, including reflective practice, collaborative exploration of relational dynamics, role clarification and psychologically safe supervisory environments.

5Exercise for Depression: Strong Option with Clinical Benefits
Lena Lisa Maria Beckers, Daniela Almeida Borges, Brennan Delattre

SUMMARY Exercise, investigated as a treatment option for depression, is promising in that it has previously shown antidepressant effects and is accessible, low-cost and additionally provides physical health benefits. This commentary assesses the effects of exercise interventions relative to control, psychological and pharmacological treatments on depressive symptoms, as reported in Clegg et al’s (2026) recent Cochrane Review. The review suggests that exercise may reduce depressive symptoms and provide benefits similar to those of psychological and pharmacological treatments. This must be interpreted with caution in light of uncertain evidence, but results show that further investigation is warranted.
