Background: Among all parasitic plants, the family Apodanthaceae is known for parasitizing the stems of specific host plants, a trait shared with other lineages. Once a year, their flowers emerge through the host bark and, at anthesis, pollination occurs. Therefore, this study focused on examining various ecological aspects of Pilostyles mexicana(Apodanthaceae), for which little information is available. Questions: What is the prevalence of P. mexicana across different locations? What are some of its reproductive traits? Who are its potential pollinators? Studied species: Pilostyles mexicana (Apodanthaceae). Study site and dates: Fieldwork was conducted from 2018 to 2021 during the blooming time of P. mexicana in three locations in the state of Chiapas, Mexico: Amatenango del Valle, Tzimol, and Zinacantán. Methods: Prevalence was investigated, and several reproductive aspects were studied, including floral display, floral biology, sexual system, and nectar production. Floral visitors were monitored, and potential pollinators were identified. Results: P. mexicana parasitizes the stems of Calliandra houstoniana (Fabaceae) and shows low prevalence across locations. In addition, it is a monoecious species with small flowers, low nectar production, and a modest floral display; these attributes do not fully explain why bees, ants, and wasps are attracted to it as potential pollinators. Conclusions: This is the first study to examine ecological aspects of P. mexicana, particularly its parasitism prevalence, floral biology, and potential pollinators. Furthermore, these results are discussed in relation to findings from other endoparasitic species of Apodanthaceae.
Background: Domestication-driven shifts to a relatively more acquisitive strategy and increased biomass allocation in plant organs have been demonstrated in some major crops. However, the extent to which this pattern is influenced by the relatively more resource-rich conditions prevailing in agroecosystems is less clear. Although soil is the main source of nutrients for plants, it remains unknown if the effect of domestication on resource-use strategy and biomass allocation patterns is contingent upon soil origin. Hypothesis: The effects of domestication and soil origin on the resource-use strategy and biomass allocation are not additive. Studied species Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius I.M. Johnst.). Methods: The effects of domestication (wild vs. domesticated plants) and soil origin (forest, homegardens, and intensive orchards) on leaf traits associated with the leaf economic spectrum and biomass allocation to above- and below-ground organs were assessed experimentally. Results: A domestication-driven shift to a relatively more acquisitive strategy was found. This effect was contingent upon soil origin. Domesticated plants reverted to a more conservative strategy when they were grown in forest soil. Increased biomass allocation and decoupling among different organs were observed in domesticated plants. Leaf production and the root:shoot ratio were also contingent upon soil origin, with greater values observed when domesticated chaya was grown in orchard soil. Conclusions: This study supports the existence of an intraspecific leaf economic spectrum in chaya. While domestication, as a main effect, tends to shift the resource-use strategy to the acquisitive side of the spectrum, this effect is clearly contingent upon the soil origin.
Background: Ferns are distributed worldwide and exhibit high species diversity in humid tropical regions, particularly in cloud forests. Ferns have remarkable adaptations and life forms, but their association needs to be better understood. Question: Are stress coping strategies related to fern life forms? Studied species: 21 tropical cloud forest fern species. Study site and year of study: Riscal, Cloud Forest Sanctuary. Xalapa, Mexico. 2019. Methods: Using open-air desiccation curves and humidity-controlled chambers with saturated salts, the physiological tolerance and recovery from leaf desiccation of 21 fern species belonging to 4 life forms in a Mexican cloud forest were quantified. Results: Epiphytic ferns showed greater physiological tolerance compared to decumbent, arborescent, and herbaceous ferns. Decumbent ferns displayed physiological behavior, intermediate between epiphytes and arborescent and herbaceous ferns. Conclusions: The life form of ferns is associated with a set of adaptive traits that facilitate adaptation to terrestrial and epiphytic microenvironments.
