•Deadman coke behaviour was studied with Magnetic Particle Tracking.•Radial migration of coke particles was observed.•Vertical bed motion was identified as driving force behind deadman renewal.•Results were accurately reproduced with a VOF/CFD-DEM model.
•Mass transfer rates for a new type of highly robust membrane contactor measured.•The mass transfer resistance was identified to be in the membrane phase.•Countercurrent multi-stage extraction model for different carboxylic acids developed.•Excellent agreement between model and experimental validation.
•The eigenvalue problem for the laminar advection–diffusion equation is solved.•Formulae for mass transfer coefficients are derived from the eigenvalue problem.•Coefficients are derived as fourth order polynomials in the driving force.•Coefficients are fundamentally different to those based on classical film theory.•Coefficients can be derived for individual streams instead of one overall value.
•We are able to simulate mass transfer and chemical kinetics simultaneously at reactor scale.•We can get local reaction rate and surface coverage on each individual Pd particle in the reactor.•The model is validated with results from a single-Pd nanoparticles embedded microfluidic reactor.
