The value obtained for the proton magnetic moment in nuclear magnetons was 2.7927748+or-0.0000020 (0.72 ppm) without the diamagnetic shielding correction. Measurements were made with a quadrupole omegatron at flux densities of 0.47, 0.94 and 1.41 T. More than 400 sets of measurements were made using H2+, HD+, D2+, 4He+ ions and protons.
For pt. II see ibid., vol.5, 1015 (1972). On the basis of the discussion in part I of the possibility of obtaining Pippard's relations involving the dependence of a lambda temperature on the composition of mixtures, together with standard relations for liquid- vapour equilibria generally, comparisons are made between the behaviour of the specific heat of solutions of 3He in liquid 4He and (a) the change in the composition of the saturated vapour as the lambda temperature is approached, and (b) the change in the slope of the vapour pressure curve as the lambda temperature is approached.
Using Komar's localized energy and spin conserved vectors associated with the Killing fields of a stationary axisymmetric universe, the author derives a covariant identity which describes in terms of variations of fields and matter functions a perfect fluid in general relativity, exhibiting in a clear and straightforward way a variety of known extremal theorems, or analogous ones, for energy or entropy.
Parameters for the ground state nuclear charge distributions of the isotopes 24Mg, 25Mg and 26Mg have been determined from elastic electron scattering in the momentum transfer range 0.20-1.15 fm-1. Calculations using a Nilsson model including configuration mixing up to 7 h(cross) omega show good agreement with experiment.
The gamma rays from the 150Nd ( alpha ,4n) 150Sm and 150Nd ( alpha ,2n) 152Sm reactions have been studied both in singles and coincidence. The ground state rotational bands in 150Sm and 152Sm are populated up to the state with spin 10+. It is found that the nuclear moment of inertia of 150Sm is substantially lower than that of 152Sm for the low spin states, but that it increases with spin and the moments of inertia converge for the high spin states. This supports earlier evidence that the change from spherical to deformed nuclei between N=88 and N=90 is gradual.
