Pythium blight, caused by Pythium spp., is a devastating disease on perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) turf. Cool-season turfgrasses are susceptible to Pythium blight, especially when environmental conditions are hot and humid and the soil is excessively wet. During optimal disease development conditions, cool-season turfgrasses can experience rapid, widespread damage. This report evaluates the efficacy of synthetic fungicides on the management of perennial ryegrass Pythium blight. Results from this trial will help turfgrass managers develop effective fungicide management programs for Pythium blight.
Mancozeb, an older broad-spectrum fungicide, faces regulatory pressure. If grapes are removed from the mancozeb label, replacement fungicides may be needed to manage multiple grape diseases, including black rot and downy mildew, caused by Phyllosticta spp. and Plasmopara viticola , respectively. In 2026, Captan 4L (captan) and Kocide 3000 (copper) were evaluated for control of black rot and downy mildew, while Xivana Prime (fluoxapiprolin) was evaluated only for downy mildew control. Treatments were applied to a ‘Camminare Noir’ American grape hybrid in Watkinsville, GA, U.S.A. Results from this trial will help growers determine which products are best for future disease-management strategies.
Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis var. tritici , is a disease that causes yield losses across wheat production acres in the United States and Canada. Stripe rust forms yellow to orange pustules in a stripe on wheat leaves. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of 10 fungicides in suppressing stripe rust on the soft white winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) cultivar ‘Ambassador’ by disease rating and yield assessments in East Lansing, MI, in 2024. The results illustrate that stripe rust can be significantly controlled by the correct choice of fungicide.
Dollar spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Clarireedia jacksonii , is one of the most destructive diseases on cool-season turfgrass, infecting a wide range of turfgrass species, and has the largest economic impact on turfgrass facilities. Symptoms of dollar spot initially start as small, circular, sunken spots that generally do not exceed 5-cm in diameter. The infected leaves show up as bleached and show a light straw color. Under favorable conditions, the disease progresses, and the spots can coalesce into irregularly shaped large patches. This report evaluates the efficacy of synthetic fungicides for managing creeping bentgrass dollar spot. Results from this trial will help turfgrass managers develop effective management programs for dollar spot.
Rhizoctonia crown and root rot (RCRR), caused by Rhizoctonia solani , leads to black rot on the surface of the sugar beet root and advances a short distance into the root. The black fungal rot typically allows other opportunistic organisms into the root, which can result in substantial bacterial rot. Considerable yield loss can occur unless crop protection measures are utilized. Therefore, new and novel germplasm sources of genetic resistance need to be identified and incorporated into commercial cultivars. This field study evaluates the RCRR resistance from 30 sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) lines from the USDA-ARS Kimberly sugar beet program during the 2024 growing season in southern Idaho. The study identified lines that can potentially be used by seed companies to improve the resistance to RCRR in sugar beet cultivars.
