1Digital Resurrection: AI and the Ethical Reimagining of Ancestral Voices and Images in Light of Ecclesiastes 9:5
Theodore Uchechukwu Dickson, Innocentia Nkeiruka Charles

The article investigates the theological and ethical implications of digital resurrection technologies with specific reference to Ecclesiastes 9:5, which affirms that “the dead know nothing.” Emerging artificial intelligence (AI) systems can now simulate the voices, personalities, and identities of the deceased, enabling posthumous interaction. While this development resonates with traditional African worldviews that venerate ancestors as spiritually active among the living, it presents serious doctrinal tensions within Christian theology, which teaches the unconscious state of the dead and anticipates bodily resurrection. The study employs a theological-analytical method, combining biblical exegesis, contextual-cultural hermeneutics, and ethical reflection within a constructive theological framework. Findings reveal that digital resurrection technologies challenge scriptural anthropology, blur ontological boundaries between life and death, and risk promoting contemporary forms of digital necromancy. The research identifies ethical concerns regarding consent, human dignity, psychological manipulation, and the commodification of death. Thus, while digital resurrection may provide emotional or cultural continuity, it contradicts biblical eschatology and introduces theological confusion within Christian contexts. The article recommends pastoral care and theological education as veritable response to the ethical dilemmas posed by AI-mediated memorial technologies.
