Preparation of thermostable bisphenols (I) comprises (a) catalytic reaction of a phenol and a ketone or aldehyde on an acid ion exchange resin in the presence of a cocatalyst in known manner; (b) passing the reaction mixture through a vessel filled with an inorganic oxide; and (c) isolating (I) from the reaction mixture in known manner.

USE -(I) are used in the production of epoxide resins, polyesters, polyester-carbonates and polycarbonates (all claimed). The process is suitable for the production of e.g. bis-(hydroxyphenyl)-(alkanes, -cycloalkanes, sulphides, ethers, ketones, sulphoxides and sulphones and ,'-bis-(hydroxyphenyl)-diisopropylbenzenes

ADVANTAGE -The introduction of step (b), which is simple and suitable for large scale manufacture, greatly improved the thermal stability of bisphenol-phenol adducts and bisphenols. In the case of bisphenol A, the oxide also increases the purity of the product by causing isomerisation of undesired o,p'-bisphenol A to the required p,p'-bisphenol A
