NOVELTY - The structure has a header containing two indicators, one providing an indication of a number of times each usable block of a non-volatile memory has been erased. Another indicator provides a total number of blocks included in the blocks of non-volatile memory. An average erase count of blocks is obtained by dividing the sum of erase counts for the blocks by the number of blocks and is stored in an average erase count (474).

USE - Used in mass digital data storage system that is utilized in system e.g. digital camera, video camera, cellular communication device, audio player and video player.

ADVANTAGE - The average erase count is obtained by dividing the sum of erase counts for the blocks by the number of blocks included in the non-volatile memory, thereby effectively separating the erased out blocks from other blocks, thus efficiently leveling the wear level in the blocks.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for the following:

    (a) a memory system including a non-volatile memory with a data structure for obtaining the average erase count

    (b) a method of determining an average number of times each block of a number of blocks within a non-volatile memory of a memory system has been erased

    (c) a method for preparing an erased block for use from a non-volatile memory of a non-volatile memory system.

DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING(S) - The drawing shows a diagrammatic block diagram representation of a system memory.

    Block mapping table (462)

    Memory blocks (465)

Least frequently erased block table (466)
