For over thirty years, the National Federation of Catholic College Students (NFCCS), an affiliate of the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS-Pax Romana), offered students at U.S. Catholic colleges and universities both a vision of an active student apostolate and a vehicle for exercising apostolic agency. As an organization in the tradition of specialized Catholic Action, the NFCCS promoted activity by students in their own milieu. This included forming representative student governments, promoting social and interracial justice, developing national and international structures to address student concerns, and mobilizing over $500,000 to aid fellow students displaced by World War II. This article examines the federation’s work from its foundation in 1937 to 1950, the halfway point in its organizational life. Mid-century began a new chapter of mobilization, particularly as the student generation that the Second World War directly shaped completed their studies and their time with the organization.
Review of Daniel K. Finn, ed. _Moral Agency within Social Structures and Culture
From August 27 to September 9, 1939 more than 400 delegates from thirty-eight countries gathered at The Catholic University of America and later at Fordham University for the eighteenth annual Pax Romana Congress. Upon hearing the news of Germany's invasion of Poland, the participants, including Polish and German students joined together in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, a gesture deeply symbolic of the mission of Pax Romana as an international student peace movement. Coming at the eve of the Second World War, the congress was a defining moment in the life of this global movement. Under the leadership of young American lay Catholics, the congress established a wartime office at The Catholic University of America, and mobilized American students into the National Federation of Catholic College Students and coordinated relief work for displaced students. Decades before social media and the World Youth Days, the 1939 congress and the wider Pax Romana network enabled students to build bridges and cross borders in meaningful ways just as a war was threating to break the world apart. This article explores the impact of this congress in developing a new vision for Pax Romana and its understanding of the church-world relationship in subsequent decades.
This essay examines the question “What is the proper role of the church and church organizations in regards to social justice?” It does so in light of the social justice legacy of Populorum Progressio and in three steps. Part I will consider the work of the Jesuit Refugee Service, a major Catholic organization that embodies Paul VI’s integral model in its work with forcibly displaced people around the world. Part II will then consider this experience considering the two major post-conciliar models of mission, starting with the integral framework presented in Populorum Progressio. Finally, this paper concludes by briefly examining the legacy of Paul’s integral model in the papacy of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope, who both develops and expands the model offered by Populorum Progressio.
