Abstract. Title of the paper: The Robustness of BLUP and EBLUP The expectations of BLP and BLUP used as estimator for fixed effects and as predictor for random effects were investigated concerning the property "unbiasedness". Different aspects of robustness research on prediction procedures are discussed. The robustness of BLUP and EBLUP was investigated with respect to the distribution ofthe random components of the model, the degree of balancedness of the experimental design, influence of the variance components ratio and different variance component estimators used in EBLUP(2) on the bases of a Computer Simulation in the random one-way model. Criteria used for the evaluation were the mean squared error (MSE) and the selection gain. Besides, an idea of the overestimation of the accuracy of EBLUP by the naive MSE approximation based on the MSE formulas of BLUP with variance component estimations instead of unknown parameters is given.

Prediction in mixed linear models by HENDERSON's (1972) BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Prediction) requires knowledge of the underlying variance/covariance components to have the property 'best'. In breeding value prediction these parameters are not known, generally. They have to be replaced by estimations and BLUP becomes estimated BLUP (EBLUP).The aim of this investigation was the evaluation of EBLUP with help of a designed simulation experiment. Criteria used for the evaluation were the mean squared error (MSE) and the (genetic) selection differential (GSD).Besides, an idea of the overestimation of the accuracy of EBLUP by the naive MSE approximation based on the MSE formulas of BLUP with variance component estimations instead of unknown parameters is given.
The efficiency of research depends on design and analysis of experiments. Different aspects of this dependence are presented. The use of results of decision theory is demonstrated. Problems of using results of decision theory are discussed, Experiments with scientific goals and experiments with great economic effects should be designed different. The use of existing information on data banks (data collections) for model choice and design of experiments is illustrated.
Long term selection experiments are simulated with gene models including one and two genes. Especially the question is of interest after how many generations in a simulated selection process homozygosity is reached.The simulations show that if there is dominance quite a large number of generations is required for reaching homozygosity.
For describing the growth of several beef cattle breeds in the first instance a qualified set of growth functions is determinated. The results of parameter and residual variance estimations for these growth functions and the existing data sets allow together with some previous knowledge the choice of a growth function which is also optimal with respect to a developed optimum criterion.

An experimental design problem is considered for the analysis of long-term selection experiments with nonlinear regression models. For a 3-parametric exponential regression function whose parameters have also a reasonable biological interpretation approximate formulas for the determination of the necessary number of observations at each generation are constructed in such a way that the half expected length of an (1-alpha)-confidence interval for a chosen parameter is not greater than a given value. In this sense the accuracy of the parameter estimators can be described.

Generalising the ANOVA method of estimating variance components in mixed linear models a simple procedure is presented to estimate skewness and kurtosis of the distributions of the random effects of the model. For the model II of a one-way classification this procedure is demonstrated explicitly.
