Based on the duality of digital experiences, this study aims to explore the composite patterns and transitions of digital stress and digital flourishing among adolescents, along with their associations with mental health. A total of 818 Chinese middle school students (Mage = 12.75 years, 50.1
Sleep disorders can severely impact adolescents' physical and mental well-being, with self-compassion potentially serving as a key factor in promoting sleep quality. To explore the association, this study recruited 1281 adolescents (Mage = 14.78 years) who completed questionnaires on self-compassion and sleep problems. Data were analyzed using latent profile analysis and network analysis. Results showed that participants could be divided into four groups: uncompassionate group, low self-relating group, self-compassionate group, and a high self-relating group. There were significant differences between the low self-relating group and the self-compassionate group in network structures. This suggests that adolescents with higher self-compassion experience fewer sleep problems. Additionally, SD8 (morning fatigue) was identified as the most effective intervention target for alleviating all types of sleep problems in both the uncompassionate group and the high self-relating group. This study provides new insights for developing sleep problem prevention strategies tailored to different patterns of self-compassion among adolescents.
In the digital era, media communication plays a critical role in shaping how climate change affects human well-being and environmental engagement. Drawing on the social amplification of risk framework, this study integrates big data analytics and behavioral experiments to examine the psychological and behavioral consequences of problem- versus solution-oriented framing. In Study 1, topic modeling of 66,472 Weibo posts identified two dominant frames, and sentiment analysis (n = 203,094) showed that problem frames were more strongly associated with negative emotions than solution frames. In Study 2, an online experiment (n = 248) demonstrated that exposure to problem frames increased negative emotions and reduced positive emotions, life satisfaction, and pro-environmental behavior relative to solution frames. In Study 3, a seven-day longitudinal study (n = 181) further revealed that repeated exposure to problem frames amplified negative emotions over time, while neither frame significantly influenced positive emotions or life satisfaction. Importantly, both frames consistently promoted pro-environmental behavior. Taken together, these findings highlight the dual role of climate change communication: while problem-focused coverage can undermine subjective well-being, both problem and solution frames are effective in sustaining environmental engagement. For global climate governance, this evidence highlights the importance of balancing risk communication with narratives that emphasize effective actions, thereby mitigating adverse mental health impacts while fostering long-term, pro-environmental behavior.
In recent years, cyberbullying victimization has become a serious public health problem in the world. It is imperative to examine risk factors in order to prevent it properly. Previous studies have yielded inconsistent findings on the relation between school climate and cyberbullying victimization, with some showing a significant association and others failing to confirm this link. Using meta-analytic approaches, this study aimed to explore the relation between school climate and cyberbullying victimization, and to investigate the moderating effects of gender, educational stage, and culture. A literature search yielded 40 effect sizes (N = 122,567) included in the meta-analysis. Results based on a random-effects model showed a significant negative relation between school climate and cyberbullying victimization (r =-0.19, p < 0.001). Furthermore, moderating analyses indicated that school climate was more strongly associated with cyberbullying victimization among middle school students than among high school students (Q = 8.97, p = 0.003). However, gender (beta = 0.06, p = 0.506) and culture (Q = 0.04, p = 0.842) did not moderate the association between school climate and cyberbullying victimization. In conclusion, there is a significant association between school climate and cyberbullying victimization, with educational stage serving as a moderating factor.
Digital stress among adolescents is prevalent and likely fluctuates over time. However, existing research has paid limited attention to the developmental course of digital stress and its heterogeneity across individuals. This study investigated developmental trajectories of adolescent digital stress and further examined their digital-use predictors and mental health outcomes. A sample of 818 Chinese middle-school students (Wave 1: Mage = 12.75, SD = 0.75; 50.1
Parental phubbing refers to a phenomenon in which parents are distracted by their smartphones when they interact with their children. It has become a common concern and linked to adolescents’ Internet addiction. However, existing studies have insufficient understanding of the mechanism of parental phubbing and adolescent Internet addiction, and have not distinguished between the father-child system and the mother-child system, nor explored differences in the gender of children. This study aims to investigate the relationship between parental phubbing and adolescent Internet addiction through sequential mediation modeling, multi-group analysis, and network analysis. Self-reported data were collected from 2,082 adolescents (Mage = 11.03 years, SD = 1.13; 47.5
Climate emotion has emerged as a crucial mechanism for studying people's psychological and behavioral responses to climate change. This study aimed to investigate the structure of climate emotions and their associations with mental health and climate actions in a Chinese population by revising the Inventory of Climate Emotions (ICE). Confirmatory factor analyses validated the applicability of a modified eight-factor, 24-item structure-including climate anger, contempt, enthusiasm, powerlessness, guilt, isolation, anxiety, and sorrow-in the Chinese context. The Chinese version of the ICE demonstrated good concurrent, predictive, and discriminant validity, as well as satisfactory internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and measurement invariance across gender and over time. Structural equation modeling revealed four distinct categories of climate emotions. Among these, climate anger, enthusiasm, and sorrow were positively associated with climate actions and had either neutral or beneficial effects on mental health. Climate guilt emerged as a mixed emotion, motivating environmental actions while being positively linked to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Climate contempt appeared to offer some psychological protection but did not promote environmental behavior. In contrast, climate powerlessness, isolation, and anxiety were not positively associated with either psychological well-being or climate action. In conclusion, the Chinese ICE can be used as an effective tool to study climate-related emotions. Furthermore, leveraging climate emotions-particularly anger, enthusiasm, and sorrow-may be key to interventions that balance individual well-being and environmental sustainability.
Sleep problems have evolved from health and psychological concerns into a pervasive societal issue. This study used latent profile analysis and network analysis to examine the subgroups and network structure of adolescent sleep problems and related psychosocial factors and compared the differences in sleep problem networks among students at different educational stages. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 5,520 students from 22 schools in Zhejiang provinces, China. The main findings of the study are as follows: (1) The problem of insufficient sleep among adolescents is widespread, with most students failing to meet the sleep duration standards recommended by the Ministry of Education, particularly on school days. (2) The latent profile analysis of sleep problems and related psychosocial factors revealed two distinct groups: a low-risk group and a high-risk group. (3) The three nodes with the highest expected influence were depression, anxiety, and adverse childhood experiences, and the factors most closely connected to school day sleep duration were Internet addiction, peer relationships, and academic burden. (4) There were significant differences in the network structure of sleep problems among students at different educational stages. These differences reflected the specific sleep problems and potential influencing factors faced by adolescents at different stages. The research results emphasize that improving adolescent sleep health requires multidimensional and differentiated intervention strategies.
In response to concerns surrounding excessive homework and off -campus tutoring for students undergoing compulsory education in China, the government implemented the "double reduction" policy to alleviate these burdens. This study aims to examine the mechanisms that underlie the longitudinal relationship between changes in academic pressure and social anxiety among Chinese adolescents under the background of this policy. A total of 2,202 valid questionnaires were obtained, and the sample consisted of 1,234 students who reported having a smartphone (age: M = 14.60, SD = 1.57). They were recruited to complete the changes in leisure time and academic pressure at Time 1, classmate support at Time 1 and Time 2, problematic smartphone use at Time 1 and Time 2, and social anxiety at Time 1, Time 2, and Time 3. The findings indicate that classmate support and problematic smartphone use at Time 2 significantly mediated the association between changes in academic pressure at Time 1 and social anxiety at Time 3. Changes in leisure time at Time 1 also affected these relationships. Specifically, compared to those with decreased leisure time, the relationship between classmate support at Time 2 and problematic smartphone use at Time 2 was stronger among adolescents with increased leisure time, while the relationship between changes in academic pressure at Time 1 and problematic smartphone use at Time 2 was weaker among adolescents with increased leisure time. These results highlight the importance of promoting effective stress coping strategies and peer interactions for adolescents, and also the importance of promoting active parental participation in leisure time management and guidance towards positive coping styles.
Emerging adulthood is a pivotal period for romantic relationships, yet the specific mechanisms through which attachment anxiety influences relationship dynamics and psychological outcomes in this phase are poorly understood. Particularly, in the context of romantic dyads, understanding how partners’ behaviors and emotional patterns reciprocally influence each other remains underexplored. This study utilizes the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model and Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediator Model to explore the relationship between attachment anxiety, relational aggression (both perpetration and victimization), and depressive symptoms among emerging adults. A sample of 138 mixed-sex emerging adulthood couples from China, was recruited (Mage = 21.40, SD = 2.54; 50
Turbulent changes in early life are a hidden source of childhood trauma, increasing potential risks for mental illness. Many studies have identified the link between childhood uncertainty and mental health. However, research on the long-term effect of early-life uncertainty (EU) on mental health has not been systematically synthesized. This meta-analysis aims to provide a quantitative estimate of the association between EU and subsequent mental health outcomes. Eight electronic databases and gray literature were searched. Twenty-eight studies met our inclusion criteria: samples of non-clinical adolescents or adults and clear and valid assessments. Random-effect models were used to calculate the pooled effect sizes of EU on internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and well-being. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis were used to explore potential moderators. Results indicated small to moderate associations involving EU and internalizing problem ( r = .28; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.228, 0.326]) and externalizing problem ( r = .16; 95% CI [0.102, 0.220]). EU was not significantly associated with well-being ( r = −.41; 95% CI [−0.738, 0.071]). Furthermore, moderator analyses found that composite uncertain experiences in childhood had a stronger negative effect than single experiences. EU was a stronger predictor of mental health problems in adults than in adolescents. Cross-sectional studies would amplify the correlation between EU and mental illness compared to longitudinal studies. In the future, childhood uncertain and unpredictable risks should receive more attention. More research needs to focus on positive psychological indicators and samples from non-Western countries.
Sleep represents one of the primary mechanisms through which global warming impacts mental health. Current research on temperature and insomnia lacks a comprehensive big data perspective. This study aims to address this gap by examining the relationship between daytime and nighttime temperatures and insomnia-related posts on China's largest social media platform, Sina Weibo. One preliminary study and two preregistered studies were conducted, with the preliminary study focusing on the insomnia-related classification model, and Studies 1 and 2 investigated spatial and temporal changes in temperature predicting insomnia, respectively. In Study 1, Weibo data from 31 provinces in China were analyzed, revealing a higher insomnia index in areas with higher nighttime temperatures. However, daytime temperature did not significantly predict insomnia. In Study 2, Weibo data from Beijing, China over six months were examined. Both daytime and nighttime temperatures were found to significantly and positively predict the number of insomnia-related posts. These findings suggest that climate change, characterized by global warming, may contribute to the worsening of insomnia in the general public. Notably, high nighttime temperatures emerge as a crucial factor hindering people from falling asleep.
The present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal and reciprocal relationships among problematic smartphone use (PSU), depressive symptoms (DS), and suicidal ideation (SI) in Chinese university students. Using a cross-lagged design, the Mobile Phone Addiction Inventory Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Self-Rating Idea of Suicide Scale as research instruments, 194 university students completed a questionnaire four consecutive times. June of Year 1, December of Year 2, June of Year 2, and December of Year 3 of their college study. We refer to these as the Time 1 (T1), Time 2 (T2), Time 3 (T3), and Time 4 (T4) assessments, respectively. The levels of PSU and DS fluctuated significantly over time. DS at T1 was significantly predicted to influence SI at T2 ( β = 0.17, p < .05); DS at T3 was significantly predicted by PSU and by SI at T2 (respectively, β = 0.30, p < .05; β = 0.21, p < .05); DS at T2 significantly predicted PSU at T3 ( β = 0.14, p < .05); and DS at T3 significantly predicted SI at T4 ( β = 0.14, p < .05) in the cross-lagged pathway. DS at T3 fully mediated the relationship between PSU at T2 and SI at T4 (indirect effect: β = 0.133, 95% CI = [0.063, 0.213]). The results suggest that there is a reciprocal relationship between PSU and DS and, furthermore, that DS plays an important mediating role between PSU and SI. Our results suggest the importance of early identification and treatment of SI. Timely reduction of PSU and improvement of DS among university students may help prevent SI.
The current study examined a multiple mediator model based on the control-value theory. A sample of 433 Chinese junior middle school students participated in questionnaires assessing teacher-student relationships (TSRs), academic emotions, academic value (AV), and academic self-efficacy (ASE). English test scores were collected as an indicator of students' English academic performance. The results indicated the following: (a) for academic enjoyment, the TSR has an effect on academic achievement through the chain intermediary of AV and ASE; (b) for academic relaxation, the TSR has an effect on English academic achievement through the single intermediary of academic relaxation and the chain intermediary of AV, ASE, and academic relaxation; (c) for academic anxiety, the TSR has an effect on English academic achievement through the single intermediary of AV, the single intermediary of academic anxiety, and the chain intermediary of AV, ASE, and academic anxiety; (d) for academic boredom, the TSR has an effect on English academic achievement through the single intermediary of academic boredom. These findings enrich the relevant research on the control-value theory and provide important insights for improving students' English academic achievement. The teacher-student relationship predicted English academic achievement The academic value and academic self-efficacy predicted English academic achievement Academic enjoyment/relaxation positively predicts English academic achievement and academic anxiety/boredom negatively predicts English academic achievement

Exploring the longitudinal relationship between career adaptability, career commitment, career identity, and career well-being among Chinese undergraduate nursing students. A mediation effect analysis was performed. The Career Adaptability Scale, the Chinese version of Career commitment, the Career identity Scale, and the Career well-being Scale were used as research instruments. Six hundred ninety-two nursing students were followed up in two waves to explore the relationships among career adaptability, career commitment, career identity, and career well-being. Model comparison was performed to explore the differences in such relationships between low and high-career interests. Career commitment at T1 mediated the relationship between career adaptability at T1 and career identity at T2 and that between career adaptability at T1 and career well-being at T2. Significant differences were observed between the mediation models of nursing students with high and low career interests. Career commitment plays a longitudinal mediator role in the relationship between career adaptability and career identity and the relationship between career adaptability and career well-being.

Using network analysis, the current study investigated the pathways that underlie selected components of sleep health and their changes over time. Undergraduates (N = 1423; 80.60% female) completed a two-wave survey, sleep health (i.e. chronotypologies (CTs), sleep procrastination (SP), sleep quality (SQ)), psychological distress (PD), emotion regulation (ER), self-control (SC), problematic smartphone use (PSU) were measured. CTs, SP, and SQ formed a spatially contiguous pattern that remained unchanged in both waves. ER and PD node increased its strength, betweenness, and closeness in the network, while the link between the two was strengthened at T2. PSU was connected to SP, but not to CTs and SQ during both waves. In the context of the network approach, SP had the highest strength, and its associations with other dimensions of individual sleep may represent key factors in understanding the influence of exposure to the COVID-19 outbreak on sleep health.
Sleep is an important physiological process, but staying up late has become a worldwide problem, particularly among university students. Sleep procrastination has been found to associated with sleep biorhythms and problematic smartphone use ("PSU") in previous studies. This two-wave study examines the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between PSU and sleep procrastination, together with the moderating role of sleep biorhythms. Participants comprised 1,423 Chinese university students. The results revealed that PSU and sleep procrastination are reciprocally related. Additionally, sleep biorhythms moderated this relationship, as PSU at T1 significantly predicted sleep procrastination at T2 for the morning larks group but not the night owls group. Accordingly, both PSU and sleep biorhythms should be considered when developing interventions for sleep procrastination.
