HUGH TINKER is Director of the Institute of Race Relations. In proportion to total population, there has been a greater concentration of Indian settlement in Israel than in Britain. In Israel Indian immigrants number almost 23,000 out of the total population of 2,841,000 (United Kingdom 223,600 Indians to total population of 55 million). The migration to Israel is as recent, or more recent than the movement to Britain; and there are significant comparisons and contrasts between the two. The Indian Jews form three groups: the Beni-Israel (the most numerous); the so-called ’White’ and ’Black’ Jews of Cochin; and the Baghdadis. There are also small numbers of Jews of European origin. The first two groups have a history in India going back at least a thousand years, while the Baghdadis migrated to Bombay in the early and middle nineteenth century.
