As part of the MediSpeech project, we aim to develop a system that transcribes and diarizes Dutch conversations between doctors and patients in real-time. In this research (in-progress) we explore ways of efficiently combining Whisper with speaker diarization (SD). After trying to prompt Whisper with text that contains speaker labels, we observed that it is able to insert labels into the transcription with promising accuracy. We continued this line of research by fine-tuning Whisper with speaker-labelled prompts to generate transcriptions in a format similar to that of Serialized Output Training (SOT). Fine-tuning Whisper yielded more consistent speaker IDs across the chunks of long-form audio and improved verbatim transcription. The study uncovered new challenges as Whisper's SD performance suffers because of mistakes that get propagated through prompts and inaccurate timestamps assigned to overlapping speech.
Medical conversations offer insights into clinical communication often absent from Electronic Health Records. However, developing reliable clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) models is hampered by the scarcity of domain-specific datasets, as clinical data are typically inaccessible due to privacy and ethical constraints. To address these challenges, we present a pipeline for generating synthetic Dutch medical dialogues using a Dutch fine-tuned Large Language Model, with real medical conversations serving as linguistic and structural reference. The generated dialogues were evaluated through quantitative metrics and qualitative review by native speakers and medical practitioners. Quantitative analysis revealed strong lexical variety and overly regular turn-taking, suggesting scripted rather than natural conversation flow. Qualitative review produced slightly below-average scores, with raters noting issues in domain specificity and natural expression. The limited correlation between quantitative and qualitative results highlights that numerical metrics alone cannot fully capture linguistic quality. Our findings demonstrate that generating synthetic Dutch medical dialogues is feasible but requires domain knowledge and carefully structured prompting to balance naturalness and structure in conversation. This work provides a foundation for expanding Dutch clinical NLP resources through ethically generated synthetic data.
The Transcription Portal is a web-based service for multilingual orthographic transcription of speech, notably Oral History interviews. It is targeted at non-technical users: it provides a simple and intuitive GUI, supports several languages, and the workflow is pre-configured. Currently, the workflow consists of three steps: 1) automatic speech recognition, 2) manual correction of the transcript, 3) data export. Summarization and translation are planned. We demonstrate the portal on a set of historical Italian interviews on the Ravensbruck concentration camps.
This proposal shares the experience of members of the CLARIN Trainers’ Network in reusing, adapting and localizing existing learning content related to speech and oral data management to meet the learning needs of the CLARIN-IT research community in the context of the Humanities and Cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud (H2IOSC) project. Following a brief introduction to the H2IOSC project and its training strategy, the article describes the transcription workshop and an accompanying workflow for managing speech and oral data, including data collection, privacy considerations, and the transcription chain. Furthermore, the authors show how they used the Skills4EOSC FAIR-by-Design methodology to convert the workshop into reusable training material, which other trainers can take and adapt to meet the needs of researchers in other communities working with oral history data.
To help realise its potential as the research infrastructure for language as social and cultural data, CLARIN is supporting the training of students and scholars in using its language data, tools and services. Lecturers and teachers in the CLARIN network have integrated CLARIN language resources into higher education programmes and other training activities. This paper showcases some recent courses and training initiatives, along with inventories and new learning materials, partly developed in EU-funded projects, which are accessible through the CLARIN Learning Hub. Each section briefly describes the motivation behind the initiative, the authors’ experience, related efforts in the field, and future perspectives.
Oral history is about oral sources of witnesses and commentors on historical events. Speech technology is an important instrument to process such recordings in order to obtain transcription and further enhancements to structure the oral account In this contribution we address the transcription portal and the webservices associated with speech processing at BAS, speech solutions developed at LINDAT, how to do it yourself with Whisper, remaining challenges, and future developments.
Sharing research data between researchers is becoming a requirement for open science in the field of clinical phonetics and speech and language pathology. An initiative entitled DELAD was started in 2015 to provide researchers a platform to discuss ongoing technical, legal and ethics issues related to sharing recordings of speech disorders, and to assist them in archiving their data for sharing with colleagues in the field. The ultimate goal of data sharing is to enhance research and teaching in the area of speech disorders. This paper first presents DELAD and its history and previous accomplishments. Then the recent work achieved by the DELAD steering group in providing information or recommendations in three areas are discussed: (1) speech annotation and automatic annotation mining, (2) consent and data storage, and (3) a role-play activity for learning data protection assessment. DELAD is an active community and researchers who share similar interests are welcome to join the (ad)venture.
In this paper, we explore the application of language and speech technology to open-ended questions in a Dutch panel survey. In an experimental wave respondents could choose to answer open questions via speech or keyboard. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) was used to process spoken responses. We evaluated answers from these input modalities to investigate differences between spoken and typed answers.We report the errors the ASR system produces and investigate the impact of these errors on downstream analyses. Open-ended questions give more freedom to answer for respondents, but entail a non-trivial amount of work to analyse. We evaluated the feasibility of using transformer-based models (e.g. BERT) to apply sentiment analysis and topic modelling on the answers of open questions. A big advantage of transformer-based models is that they are trained on a large amount of language materials and do not necessarily need training on the target materials. This is especially advantageous for survey data, which does not contain a lot of text materials. We tested the quality of automatic sentiment analysis by comparing automatic labeling with three human raters and tested the robustness of topic modelling by comparing the generated models based on automatic and manually transcribed spoken answers.
The current largest open-source generic automatic speech recognition (ASR) system for Dutch, Kaldi NL, does not include a domain-specific healthcare jargon in the lexicon. Commercial alternatives (e.g., Google ASR system) are also not suitable for this purpose, not only because of the lexicon issue, but they do not safeguard privacy of sensitive data sufficiently and reliably. These reasons motivate that just a small amount of medical staff employs speech technology in the Netherlands. This paper proposes an innovative ASR training method developed within the Homo Medicinalis (HoMed) project. On the semantic level it specifically targets automatic transcription of doctor-patient consultation recordings with a focus on the use of medicines. In the first stage of HoMed, the Kaldi NL language model (LM) is fine-tuned with lists of Dutch medical terms and transcriptions of Dutch online healthcare news bulletins. Despite the acoustic challenges and linguistic complexity of the domain, we reduced the word error rate (WER) by 5.2%. The proposed method could be employed for ASR domain adaptation to other domains with sensitive and special category data. These promising results allow us to apply this methodology on highly sensitive audiovisual recordings of patient consultations at the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (Nivel).
Corpora of speech of individuals with communication disorders (CSD) are invaluable resources for education and research, but they are costly and hard to build and difficult to share for various reasons. DELAD, which means 'shared' in Swedish, is a project initiated by Professors Nicole Müller and Martin Ball in 2015 that aims to address this issue by establishing a platform for researchers to share datasets of speech disorders with interested audiences. To date four workshops have been held, where selected participants, covering various expertise including researchers in clinical phonetics and linguistics, speech and language therapy, infrastructure specialists, and ethics and legal specialists, participated to discuss relevant issues in setting up such an archive. Positive and steady progress has been made since 2015, including refurbishing the DELAD website (http://delad.net/) with information and application forms for researchers to join and share their datasets and linking with the CLARIN K-Centre for Atypical Communication Expertise (https://ace.ruhosting.nl/) where CSD can be hosted and accessed through the CLARIN B-Centres, The Language Archive (https://tla.mpi.nl/tools/tla-tools/) and TalkBank (https://talkbank.org/). The latest workshop, which was funded by CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) was held as an online event in January 2021 on topics including Data Protection Impact Assessments, reviewing changes in ethics perspectives in academia on sharing CSD, and voice conversion as a mean to pseudonomise speech. This paper reports the latest progress of DELAD and discusses the directions for further advance of the initiative, with information on how researchers can contribute to the repository.
We developed a bilingual Frisian/Dutch speech recognizer for council meetings in Fryslan (the Netherlands). During these meetings both Frisian and Dutch are spoken, and code switching between both languages shows up frequently. The new speech recognizer is based on an existing speech recognizer for Frisian and Dutch named FAME!, which was trained and tested on historical radio broadcasts. Adapting a speech recognizer for the council meeting domain is challenging because of acoustic background noise, speaker overlap and the jargon typically used in council meetings. To train the new recognizer, we used the radio broadcast materials utilized for the development of the FAME! recognizer and added newly created manually transcribed audio recordings of council meetings from eleven Frisian municipalities, the Frisian provincial council and the Frisian water board. The council meeting recordings consist of 49 hours of speech, with 26 hours of Frisian speech and 23 hours of Dutch speech. Furthermore, from the same sources, we obtained texts in the domain of council meetings containing 11 million words; 1.1 million Frisian words and 9.9 million Dutch words. We describe the methods used to train the new recognizer, report the observed word error rates, and perform an error analysis on remaining errors.
This paper introduces a new CLARIN Knowledge Center which is the K-Centre for Atypical Communication Expertise (ACE for short) which has been established at the Centre for Language and Speech Technology (CLST) at Radboud University. Atypical communication is an umbrella term used here to denote language use by second language learners, people with language disorders or those suffering from language disabilities, but also more broadly by bilinguals and users of sign languages. It involves multiple modalities (text, speech, sign, gesture) and encompasses different developmental stages. ACE closely collaborates with The Language Archive (TLA) at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in order to safeguard GDPR-compliant data storage and access. We explain the mission of ACE and show its potential on a number of showcases and a use case.
