The Limits of Transformation relating to Sustainability. Pedagogical-Anthropological Perspectives in the Anthropocene The global crisis has been emerging as an ecological and political, and more recently also as a pandemic one: It puts people into the difficulty of having to choose between competing images of humanity in their everyday actions. The refusal of the incorrigible to change their way of life towards increased sustainability raises the question of what future-oriented narratives can be developed for the necessary transformation of the status quo.
English Abstract: This paper investigates the performative dimensions of recognition and esteem that shape educational culture. The empirical reconstruction documents how the cultural accentuations take effect in rituals and institutionalized practices. Working out the inherent meaning of the rituals, we are able to grasp recognition and esteem as distinct aspects of a phenomenon by which educational processes are directed.
This contribution focuses on the important role of gestures in child-rearing and socialization. Reflecting upon gestures reveals not only their special medial nature but also their potential. Thus, rather than highlighting gestures alone, we want to elaborate a broader concept of gesturality. In classroom interactions, gestures become significant as part of an educational tableau. They need to be observed in educational situations to complement existing insights into the meaning of bodily behavior and to stimulate a revival of related educational traditions. Our ethnographic approach to studying gestures in education differs from other disciplines. As important as these studies are, many of them measure the role and significance of gestures solely on the basis of semiotic and semantic criteria, and thus fail to capture their pragmatic aspects. Our ethnographic research on gestures aims to investigate the corporeality, the mimetic and performative character of gestures, and furthermore to depict the involvement of gestural forms of expression in the constitution of social life. In the following sections, we will develop four dimensions which are of major importance in education and social science research: gestures as (1) movements of the body, (2) expression and representation, (3) means of child-rearing and education, (4) ways of creating meaning. These dimensions revolve around several anthropological characteristics which have received little attention in the research of gestures to date, and which also add dimensions and categories that are important in the educational sciences, thereby expanding the existing discourses.
English Abstract This contribution aims to develop a new understanding of the meaning of „education room“ which comprises far more than a measurable area. The school, and especially the classroom, represent a socially constructed place. Here educational processes become spaces to experience and learn with the objective of forming the personalities of young children. The performative conception of “education room” focuses the reciprocal effect of actions and structures, i.e. the structural order and material arrangement and positioning of objects and people as well as specific physical practices. Thereby it becomes evident that spatial materiality and sociability are closely interwoven and create specific atmospheric qualities. The empirical data of an inner city school in Berlin verifies that the spatial/material classroom order implicates symbolic references, and pre-structures classroom interactions. Depending on the location, time and people, “education room” generates different educational spaces by simultaneously setting limitations and imposing restrictions. In this sense, the board area divides the classroom into two spaces for interaction similar to that of “stage” and “audience” in theater. The “stage” can become an area of self-presentation for both the teacher and the pupil. On the other hand the physical/material position in the “audience” can have an impact on the sociability in the group of pupils and create “public” or exclusive “closed” spaces within the educational framework. The sensual perception of objective factors and subjective feelings are stored in the physical memory and influence the educational process beyond the instructional purposes. For this reason the structural room requirements and the social constitution of space must be equally considered at the reflection of “education room”.
English Abstract Since the end of the Second World War, the European integration process reflects the will of the leaders of the continent to pursue a policy of reconciliation and mutual understanding among the former enemies. It aims to apprehend difference in a peaceful way. We find this argument not only in the historical debate, but also in education policy debates, which propose a particular apprehension of otherness. The present study shows that this apprehension can be part of a relation of productive tension with various approaches to otherness. This approach seems apt to grasp the complexity of the phenomenon and of the conceptual approaches of the EU and of European citizenship. It does not neglect positions of political affirmation, nor concrete examples of possible implementations of European citizenship. In addition, this research perspective responds to the abyss that is now evident between the political decisions, directives and laws of the European Union on the one hand and the citizen as a committed actor on the other.
AbstractThis article reconstructs a conflict arising in a primary school in an inner-city district of Berlin. A pencil case of a newly enrolled girl with a migration background has been hidden. Is it a mobbing act? The teacher feels affected and reacts aggressively. In a longue monologue she collectively holds to account the children. Through her facial expressions, her gestures, her posture, and the prosody of her voice she communicates her moral point of view and her critique of the children. Emphatically she demands not to exclude but to integrate the girl. The interruption of the lesson indicates the importance of the conflict. To avoid the creation of a scapegoat the situation is taken seriously. Committed to the idea of a parenting instruction the teacher wants to secure recognition and appreciation among the children. The question arises if her strong emotional reaction is the adequate way to avoid the exclusion of the girl.
AbstractThe background of the conflict study presented in part II consists of ten transdisciplinary and transcultural anthropological studies based on the paradigm of historical anthropology. On this basis, the “Berlin Ritual and Gesture Study” financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) was carried out. This 12 years lasting research project examined the role of rituals and gestures in the major fields of socialization “family”, “school”, “peer-group” and “media” in the context of a Berlin inner city primary school. It provided the conceptual and methodological starting point for the exploration of the possible beginning of a mobbing conflict and the difficulties to handle it. In this study, a methodology of ethnography of education was developed which served as basis for the analysis of the mobbing process in Part II.
Abstract This article refers to an ethnographical study within the framework of a cross-cultural research project in Germany and Japan. It focuses on the ritual staging and performing of family happiness within two countries: Christmas in Germany and oshogatsu, the turn of the year, in Japan. Happiness is hereby conceived as a particular form of well-being that is (intended) to be evoked during the yearly reunion of the family. Through ritual practice, the family members (re)confirm their family bonds and create their specific idea of family happiness. In the German family outlined below, Christmas Day in Germany happens to be the first Christmas Celebration in the new family constellation for everyone, and the family members are about to perform their future life plan. In Japan, oshogatsu relies on experiences and memories within the particular family constellation which allow an emotional proximity between four generations. The analytical approach reveals the social cultural impact on emotions and their performative and amplifying potential in rituals
This contribution focuses on the multidimensionality of the constitution of space in pedagogical settings, particularly with regard to the mediality of gestures. Through the medium of bodily forms of expression, spaces are constituted, educational processes are structured and emotions are shaped. This anthropological perspective forms the basis of the ethnographic study at hand, which empirically investigates the interplay of gestures, emotions and (social) constitution of spaces. The research project takes place in an inner-city primary school in a German city; the cooperation between the FU and this school has existed for more than 12 years. Fifteen years ago, the school’s orientation toward the principles of progressive education was introduced. Hence, the pupils are taught in mixed-age learning groups. The current research interest is on how pedagogic interactions are generated in relation to room requirements and arrangements, as well as of how those involved are positioned and act together. For this purpose, we studied a particular learning group composed of first to third graders. In addition to participant observation, two cameras videotaped the classroom interactions.Using excerpts from the data material, this contribution shows how pedagogical settings in the teaching of new first graders are arranged. In these settings, emotions are represented using gestures, and (social) spaces are generated which have an influence both on the interactions and the atmosphere. It becomes clear that gestures are highly context-dependent, and thus are to be understood and interpreted according to the reciprocal effects of actions and structures only in their particular educational setting. The symbolic and/or ritual character of these reciprocal interactions provides practical knowledge about courses of action that aid in the organization of institutional situations. Their dynamic dimension arises from the interplay of the corporeal, mimetic and performative character of bodily expression, as well as the spatial-material arrangements through which institutional situations are actively influenced, affectively experienced and subjectively evaluated by those involved. The results show that pedagogical settings achieve social effects that cannot always be anticipated and planned. In this sense, body and room arrangement coincide as mediums that communicate information about the individual as well as the learning community. With reference to a relational and process-based understanding of space, the study at hand develops four dimensions of gestural forms of expression that are significant from an educational and social science perspective: gestures as movements of the body, gestures as expression and representation, gestures as a means of education and upbringing, and gestures as forms of meaning generation. As a public place, the classroom is an educational space that institutionalizes many educational options through areas that are structured in different ways. Its social effects are achieved through the interaction of space, the body and social practices that contain symbolic references. The study illustrates that the mimetic, performative, corporeal and imaginative aspects of gestures must be taken into account in the discussion of a dynamic conception of space.
The article focuses on pedagogical practices of recognition and esteem (Wertschätzung) and on the question of how those practices can be appropriately studied and epistemologically grasped. The investigation involves an inner-city elementary school in a socio-economically problematic district. With regard to the communication forms in this specific school, we identify specific practices which constitute a culture of recognition and esteem that provides a reference framework and performative space to those involved. But what does a culture of recognition and esteem designate? Three heuristic categories have been developed as a result of our study in order to better describe and define the phenomenon:(1) the act of recognition and esteem,(2) the creation of an atmosphere of recognition and esteem and,(3) practices of shaping a culture of recognition and esteem. We analyse the verbal, non-verbal and performative aspects of communication within the context of schooling. The data was produced as part of an ethnographic research collaboration that has lasted over twelve years and which was initiated in the context of the Berlin Ritual Study at Freie Universität Berlin. The ethnography is based on participant observation and videography of pupils aged eight to twelve. Our systematization of recognition and esteem shows a potentiality to describe a phenomenon without reducing complexity and highlights the everyday work of pedagogical practice.
This article focuses on the social dimension of emotions and gestures, which refers to the physical-sensual integration of the individual in his/her social context. In the institutional context of the school, this dimension is often disregarded in favor of the instruction of cognitive-intellectual competences, as well as the measurement of result-oriented achievements. In the first chapter the current research on emotions and gestures is briefly outlined. The findings provide a basis to conceptualize emotions as a social dynamic phenomenon which serves as a physical and sensual key element between the personal state and the social world. Therefore emotions and gestures not only have a significant impact on social relationships, but also play a dominant role in their configuration. The following chapter delineates to what extent a process- and practice-oriented perspective enables the empirical identification and the reconstruction of the circulating outcomes of the participants. Finally, the data samples document how emotions and gestures unfold their performative and constitutive effects in social performances. Hereby it becomes evident that emotions and gestures generate binding commitments in 'emotion episodes' by negotiating feeling rules, sharing group experiences, and (re)presenting status positions. The aim of the article is to conceive emotions as meaningful components of sociality that deserve specific attention in the discourse of educational science.

Brettspiele, Kartenspiele, Ballspiele, Kampfspiel, usw. Was ist allen diesen gemeinsam ?
