This book is broken into 12 sections each written by separate authors including NIST personnel who have worked in its Building and Fire Research Laboratory. The first chapter, “Introduction to Flame Retardancy and Polymer Flammability,” discusses tests that can be performed to determine polymer flammability as well as basic mechanisms of flame retardancy. Chapter 2, “Fundamentals of Polymer Nanocomposite Technology,” covers the basics of such composite fabrication and features. It is well supported that there are thermodynamic advantages to the use of flame retardant nanofillers. Also covered are the effects of such fillers on polymer crystallization, mechanical properties and pigmentation. Ideal dispersion of the nanophases is emphasized. Chapter 3, “Flame Retardant Mechanism of PolymerClay Nanocomposites,” cites such composites (clay-based) as a well examined system. Matrices of polystyrene and polypropylene are highlighted. Photos and corresponding discussions detail the gasification of these materials and show their destruction to be one of non-flammable carbonization with slow crack formation. Chapter 4, “Molecular Mechanics Calculations of the Thermodynamic Stabilities of Polymer-Carbon Nanotube Composites,” is provided as a more recent area of focus where much simulation modeling has been performed in light of CNTs strong and developing interest since their discovery. Chapter 5, “Considerations Regarding Specific Impacts of the Principal Fire Retardancy Mechanisms in Nanocomposites,” details the fire retardancy mechanics of various microstructural approaches to flammability abatement in nanocomposites. The main approaches to suppression of the flame formation are:
