Social work has gradually developed and regained its formal recognition since the 1980s in the People's Republic of China. Because of its unique social, cultural, and political contexts, the professionalization of social work in China has to struggle within tensions from three domains: the professional domain, the political domain, and the market domain. Tensions within these three domains interact with one another dynamically in shaping the current and future development of social work in China.
English Social work education in China has developed dramatically over the past decade. Cultural indigenization is important in mental health practice within various cultural contexts. In this paper, the writer describes the teaching experience in developing the reflectivity of social work students in mental health practice. By means of various teaching and learning strategies, students achieve various levels of reflectivity in cultural indigenization. They were: basic reflectivity by knowing the difference between western and Chinese concepts of mental health; consciousness reflectivity by bewaring one's own cultural orientation in mental health and mental illness; critical reflectivity by reflecting one's own cultural orientation in mental health practice with clients with mental illness.
In reflective practice, social work students are encouraged to undergo self-reflection. It is a process of self-analysis, self-evaluation, self-dialogue and self-observation. Under appropriate conditions, social workers' self-reflection can be very constructive, resulting in self-enhancement. However, under inappropriate conditions, social workers' self-reflection in reflective practice can be destructive and create problems for their professional and self-development.

A case example demonstrates this approach.
