PurposeThis study aims to delineate the antecedents of two divergent stress outcomes - distress and eustress - resulting from the use of smart healthcare systems (SHSs).Design/methodology/approachGrounded in the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, this study examines how perceived SHS-use hindrance demands and resources differentially impact distress and eustress, with espoused organizational cultural values positioned as a key antecedent to these perceived resources. The research model is empirically validated by analyzing survey data collected from 244 doctors at a large hospital in China.FindingsWe find that all perceived SHS-use resources are positively related to eustress, and the two perceived SHS-use demands are positively related to distress. Espoused organizational cultural values are found to be antecedents of perceived SHS-use resources. The perceived SHS-use resources are not significant to distress.Originality/valueThe findings suggest that increasing eustress is a very efficient way to achieve SHS-use satisfaction.
When reading an online review, consumers rely on implied trust-building factors within it. Trust antecedents have been extensively researched and categorized into argument quality and source credibility. However, there is still a need to investigate how their help for consumers differs across national cultures. Furthermore, while a profile photo has been found to enhance the helpfulness of a review by improving source credibility, little is known about how consumers perceive user appearance in a review picture and no research has compared these two types of visual information. To bridge these gaps, we examine how trust antecedents and visual information help consumers' decision making differently across national cultures, using reviews collected from Amazon in the US and Germany, respectively. Our results show that information quality is more helpful for consumers in an individualistic and low uncertainty avoidance culture, whereas source credibility is more valued in the opposite culture. Interestingly, the effects of the two types of visual information, user appearance in a profile photo versus in a review picture, also differ across cultures. This research contributes to the online review literature by introducing visual information and national culture with new perspectives of trust. Our findings suggest that multinational e-commerce businesses adopt culture-specific strategies in review systems to better help consumers make informed purchase decisions.
The unique characteristics of online social communities call for a reexamination and adaptation of established behavioral theories of trust decision-making. Guided by relevant social science and computational graph theories, we propose a conceptual model of trust decision-making in online social networks. This is the first study that integrates the existing graph-based view of trust decision-making in social networks into socio-psychological theories of trust to provide a richer understanding of trusting decisions in online social networks. We introduce new behavioral antecedents of trusting decisions, and redefine and integrate existing graph-based concepts to develop our proposed conceptual model. We introduce new behavioral antecedents of trusting decisions that have not been identified in previous research. We also identify novel operationalization methods to measure behavioral trust-inducing factors for online social networks. Our empirical findings indicate that both behavioral and network-specific trust decision-making factors should be considered in studying trusting decisions in online social networks.
Trustworthiness can make a review helpful for customers. As trust formation is influenced by national culture, generalization of the trust effect may not always work for another culture. However, the trust effect on review helpfulness has been studied mainly in one country, the US. To fill in this gap, we examine how review contents and reviewer information can have different impacts on review evaluation of customers by national culture in two countries-US and Germany. As a result, trust antecedents are overall important in elevating review quality, but the review contents are more valued in an individualistic culture (US) while reviewer information is more important in culture scoring high in uncertainty avoidance (Germany). Interestingly, we also found that visual information, a picture, has a different role depending on the culture. These results can offer business implications so that multinational e-commerce companies need to have culture-specific strategies in review management.
The sharing economy, as an emerging business model, has grown greatly in the last decade. However, the acceptance rate of the sharing economy varies from country to country. Researchers have noted the importance of cultural values on technology acceptance in different countries. This study investigates the influence of national cultural values and trust on the acceptance of online sharing hospitality platforms by users in the US and China via a survey methodology. The four espoused national cultural dimensions of individualism/collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity/femininity, and power distance were measured at the individual level. Extending from the technology acceptance model (TAM), the research model integrates both direct and moderating effects of culture and trust. The two constructs of trust both have significant direct effects on intention to use. Uncertainty avoidance has a significant moderating effect. The results emphasize the importance of trust and cultural values, especially uncertainty avoidance in online hospitality platforms adoption.
Pedagogy using gamification has recently received much attention as a way of enhancing student learning and retention. Additionally, academic institutions are making extensive use of online resources to expand teaching beyond the traditional classroom setting. Both academic institutions and companies utilize virtual teams to accomplish remote teamwork, particularly in a post-COVID environment. Despite the growing interest in incorporating gamification into teaching for business school courses, prior researchers have paid little attention to team-based gamification in the online learning environment. The purpose of this study is to examine if team members' perceived team cohesion influences their perceptions of flow. Also, we investigate the relationships among three flow dimensions: concentration, perceived control, and perceived enjoyment. We tested our research model using an enterprise resource planning simulation game involving 187 business students. The results of structural equation modeling with partial least squares analysis support all of our hypotheses.
Online survey applications offer various options for administering items, such as approaches that completely or partially randomize the order in which they present items to each subject. Vendors claim individual randomization eliminates key sources of method bias that can impact reproducibility. However, little empirical evidence exists to directly support this claim, and it is difficult to evaluate based on existing research because such research has underreported item-ordering methodologies and the reporting that does occur frequently lacks clarity. In this paper, we investigate the effect that item ordering has on reproducibility in IS online survey research via comprehensively comparing five prominent item-ordering approaches: 1) individually randomized, 2) static grouped by construct, 3) static intermixed, 4) individually randomized grouped-by-construct blocks containing static items, and 5) static grouped-by-construct blocks containing individually randomized items. We found significant, overarching differences among these approaches that can threaten research findings’ reproducibility. These differences appear across the measures we studied, which included item and construct means, reliability and construct validity statistics, serial effects, and subjects’ fatigue and frustration that resulted from the survey-taking process. Our findings support a call for several key changes in how researchers report and use item-ordering approaches that pertain particularly to IS online survey research.
Observing the positive aspects of others' lives on social media (SM) can bring about envy among users. Drawing from social comparison and technology acceptance theories, this study develops a research model to explain how envy occurs and impacts SM users' behavior. In this work, we conducted two studies across three different SM settings to investigate two types of envy, benign and malicious envy. The results show that malicious envy is negatively related to the dependent variable of SM use intention while benign envy facilitates it. The findings provide many valuable contributions to both information systems (IS) academia and industry. This study identifies the unique SM factors intertwining with envy. Moreover, this work helps SM users and practitioners be aware of the potential envy issue on SM so they can take effective actions to enhance SM use.
In this study, we investigate the relationship between the occupational culture of information technology (IT) personnel and knowledge sharing in organizations. We suggest that some elements of IT occupational culture affect knowledge sharing among IT personnel and business end users. Drawing on cultural psychology, we present one possible approach through which IT occupational culture manifests through six elements of organizational structure (i.e., stories, symbols, power structures, control systems, and rituals and routines) and affects the knowledge-sharing process. In doing so, we better understand behaviors related to knowledge sharing and IT diffusion in organizations beyond the limitations of previous IT-diffusion studies.
A growing body of literature examines how to elicit knowledge contributions to electronic knowledge repositories (EKRs) with the goal of helping organizations increase implementation benefits. While this literature has explained in detail the initial EKR adoption by knowledge contributors, it has not yet examined the drivers of postadoptive EKR usage for contributing knowledge. Postadoptive EKR usage, such as innovative feature use, can potentially result in richer contributions to EKRs. To aid understanding of how to unlock the benefits of EKRs for organizations, this study examines the impact of basic human values on one type of postadoptive behavior that goes well beyond basic usage: trying to innovate with EKR features. We develop a research model that integrates human values and trying to innovate with EKRs, suggesting that human values indicate modes of independent thought and action and can lead to attempts to innovate in EKR use by increasing the frequency of EKR usage. Data collected from 233 knowledge workers support the model. Our findings shed light on how to encourage innovative EKR usage and underscore the importance of human values for the success of knowledge management initiatives.
Online social networks are growing rapidly. As people from all over the world can use these sites without any geographic boundaries, it becomes difficult for organizations to predict user behavior. Prior literature revealed that most previous studies focused on a single culture and on a single social networking site, mainly Facebook. Also, even if there were cross-national cultural studies, they were primarily based on Hofstede's cultural index scores. In this study, we focus on espoused national cultural values in the usage of Instagram. We propose a model and conduct a pilot test. Results indicate that people who espouse more collectivistic values tend to use Instagram more frequently and are more likely to share more posts.
The use of virtual worlds as an emerging technology is already having a significant impact on business to consumer commerce and on corporate Internet retailing strategies. This research investigates consumer behavior in e-commerce retail environments, particularly with respect to consumer attitudes toward using virtual world’s shopping compared to web-based, online shopping for real-world items. We investigate two forms of presence, perceived social presence and telepresence, and their effect on attitudes toward e-commerce, attitudes that ultimately influence the consumer's intention to shop using a particular e-commerce environment. Key implications of this research for researchers and practitioners are discussed.
Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is a designation for educational degree programs that have certain benefits that non-STEM programs do not. To achieve a STEM classification, a program must meet certain criteria. Programs in the natural sciences, engineering, and math departments often readily meet these criteria. However, although programs such as information systems, information technology, and business intelligence have technology at their core, these programs, especially in business colleges, often face difficulties in meeting the STEM criteria. In this paper, we review the STEM designation and provide insight into information systems and related degree programs that have received this designation based on findings from an AIS task force and an AMCIS panel discussion.
Firms currently use teams extensively to accomplish organizational objectives. Furthermore, gamification has recently attracted much attention as a means of persuading employees and customers to engage in desired behaviors. Despite the importance of teams and the growing interest in gamification as a persuasion tool, past researchers have paid little attention to team-based gamification from a multilevel perspective. Based on motivational consistency theories, we hypothesize that at the team level, team performance has a positive effect on team cohesion. Drawing on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM), we further hypothesize two cross-level effects in the context of team-based gamified training: first, that team cohesion positively moderates the relationship between utilitarian perceptions (i.e., perceived quality of learning) and attitude; and second, that team cohesion negatively moderates the relationship between hedonic perceptions (i.e., perceived enjoyment of learning) and attitude. We tested our research model using an enterprise resource planning (ERP) simulation game involving 232 participants in 78 teams. The results of ordinary least squares and hierarchical linear modeling analysis support our hypotheses. This study makes three substantive contributions to the team literature and to the ELM in the context of team-based gamified training. First, it theorizes and empirically tests the effect of team performance on team cohesion at the team level. Second, it extends the ELM by examining the cross-level moderation of team cohesion on human information processing. Third, it demonstrates that the utilitarian and hedonic aspects of information technology do not influence user attitudes equally.
Hofstede's work on national culture has been extensively used in cross-national studies in the information systems discipline. In particular, many cross-national cultural researchers have used Hofstede's cultural index. This study argues that espoused national cultural values should be measured when the unit of analysis of the cross-national cultural study is the individual. This study reviews cross-national studies published in eight IS journals and examines both cross-national studies and cross-national cultural studies. After that, this work provides rationales of why espoused national cultural values should be measured. Finally, we conclude that espoused national culture is more appropriate for individual behavior research.
How does uncertainty and anticipatory anxiety affect technology use? Earlier research has consistently suggested that uncertainty and anticipatory anxiety adversely impels one’s logical judgments, decisions, and behaviors in many situations. In this paper, we examine the combined influence of uncertainty and anticipatory anxiety on technology use. While the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has been widely adopted and used, it has shown limited explanatory and predictive power (Chuttur, 2009). The low explanatory power begs for an explanation to what is missing? We believe that uncertainty and anticipatory anxiety could provide a substantial addition to explaining technology use. We suggest that investigating a person’s uncertainty and anticipatory anxiety due to unforeseen/unpredictable circumstances and outcomes could lend to a better understanding of a user’s behavioral intention and use. Thus, the contribution of this study will shed light on the role of uncertainty and anticipatory anxiety on the fundamental issue of technology use.
Researchers have very limited understanding of how continuous usage intention of social media (SM) are associated with online benign envy and individual-level culture. This paper addresses this gap and provides a theoretical framework to illustrate how manifestations of national cultural values at the individual level of analysis may influence SM use behaviors through online envy. We argue that espoused individualism/collectivism and espoused uncertainty avoidance are important antecedents for eliciting benign envy, while the espoused power distance and espoused masculinity/femininity dimensions are salient moderators for the consequences resulting from online benign envy. Empirical results from a sample of 387 SM users supported the majority of the hypotheses, suggesting that espoused national culture interplaying with online benign envy are important factors for continuance use intention of SM. Finally, theoretical contributions and practical implications are provided.
Online survey applications typically offer the capability to individually randomize the order in which survey items are presented to subjects, a method that structurally eliminates several sources of method bias inherent to static surveys. IS researchers who use online surveys have a strong interest in knowing how prior surveys were administered in published research, however, we find this information is rarely available in current practice. This paper presents a call for increased transparency in reporting item-ordering methodology in future online IS survey research. This call is based on 1) a literature review of online survey research published in the AIS Senior Scholars' Basket of Journals, 2) results of new research comparing reliability and construct validity characteristics produced by individually-randomized vs. static survey administration methods, and 3) results of hypothetical structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses contrasting structural models following purification of the individually-randomized and static datasets.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. This is a designation that we've heard about in higher education, particularly in North America and the United States, for several years now, and programs that fall under STEM can receive benefits beyond what others receive. So, you may be thinking, "I teach technology, and my school's degree program is information systems, information technology, business intelligence, or some technology related major. So, it must be STEM, right?" Not necessarily. To be classified as STEM a program must fit a special set of pre-defined criteria. This panel is designed to help schools determine if their programs are a good fit for STEM designation and if so, how to navigate the steps toward gaining that designation.
