Three μ1,5-dicyanamide bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes having molecular formula [Mn(dca)2(H2O)2]n·(hmt)n (1), [Co(dca)2(H2O)2]n·(hmt)n (2) and [Co(dca)2(bpds)]n (3) [dca=dicyanamide; hmt=hexamethylenetetramine; bpds=4,4′-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study, low temperature (300–2K) magnetic measurement and thermal behavior. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 reveals that they are isostructural, comprising of 1D coordination polymers [M(dca)2(H2O)2]n [M=Mn(II), Co(II) for 1 and 2, respectively] with uncoordinated hmt molecules located among the chains. The [M(dca)2(H2O)2]n chains and the lattice hmt molecules are connected through H-bonds resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. The octahedral N4O2 chromophore surrounding the metal ion forms via two trans located water oxygens and four nitrogens from four nitrile dca. Complex 3 is a 1D chain formed by two μ1,5-dca and one bridging bpds. The octahedral N6 coordination sphere surrounding the cobalt ions comprises four nitrogens from dca and two from bpds. Low temperature magnetic study indicates small antiferromagnetic coupling for all the complexes. Best fit parameters for 1: J=−0.17cm−1, g=2.03 with R=6.1×10−4; for 2, J=−0.50cm−1, and for 3, J=−0.95cm−1.
The self-assembly of a terminally protected tripeptide Boc-γ-Abu(1)-Ala(2)-Trp(3)-OMe (γ-Abu=γ-aminobutyric acid) 1 results in the formation of a nanostructured supramolecular zipper through various non-covalent interactions in the crystal in which the indole side-chain of the Trp(3) residue plays a key role via N–H⋯π interactions.
New Pd(II), Pt(II) and Re(V) complexes of 3-aminosalicylic acid (H2salNH2) and 3-hydroxyantranilic acid (HantOH) have been prepared, cis-[Pt (HsalNH)(PPh3)2] · 0.25C2H5OH (1), trans-[PdCl(salNH2)(PPh3)2] (2), trans-[ReOI2(HsalNH2)(PPh3)] · (CH3)2CO (3), cis-[Pt(HantO)(PPh3)2] (4), trans-[PdCl(antOH)(PPh3)2] · 4H2O (5), [PdCl(antOH)(bipy)] · C2H5OH (6), [PdCl2(HantOH)2] (7) and trans-[ReOI(HantO)(PPh3)2] · (CH3)2CO (8). The crystal structure of complex 1 was determined showing chelation of HsalNH2− through the adjacent nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the amino and phenolate groups. Infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopic data for the complexes are presented.
New hydrophobic, tetradentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents, 6,6'-bis-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridines (BTBPs) have been synthesised. These reagents form complexes with lanthanides and crystal structures with 11 different lanthanides have been determined. The majority of the structures show the lanthanide to be 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)3] although Yb and Lu are 9-coordinate in complexes with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)2(H2O)](NO3). In these complexes the BTBP ligands are tetradentate and planar with donor nitrogens mutually cisi.e. in the cis, cis, cis conformation. Crystal structures of two free molecules, namely C2-BTBP and CyMe4-BTBP have also been determined and show different conformations described as cis, trans, cis and trans, trans, trans respectively. A NMR titration between lanthanum nitrate and C5-BTBP showed that two different complexes are to be found in solution, namely [La(C5-BTBP)2]3+ and [La(C5-BTBP)(NO3)3]. The BTBPs dissolved in octanol were able to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 1 M nitric acid with large separation factors.
Three new carboxylato-bridged polymeric networks of Mn-II having molecular formula [Mn(ox)(dpyo)](n) (1), {[Mn-2(mal)(2)(bpee)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5(bpee)center dot 0.5(CH3OH)}n, (2) and {[Mn-3(btc)(2)(2,2'-bipy)(2)(H2O)(6)]center dot 4H(2)O}(n) (3) [dpyo, 4,4'-bipyridine N,N'dioxide; bpee, trans-1,2 bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene; 2,2'-bipy, 2,2'-bipyridine; ox = oxalate dianion; mal = malonate dianion; btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate trianion] have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and low temperature magnetic measurements. Structure determination of complex I reveals a covalent bonded 2D network containing bischelating oxalate and bridging dpyo; complex 2 is a covalent, bonded 3D polymeric architecture, formed by bridging malonate and bpee ligands, resulting in an open framework with channels filled by uncoordinated disordered bpee and methanol molecules. Whereas complex 3, comprising btc anions bound to three metal centers, is a 1D chain which further extends its dimensionality to 3D via pi-pi and H-bonding interactions. Low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the existence of weak antiferromagnetic interaction in all these complexes. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006).
A tetraazamacrocycle containing ferrocene moieties has been synthesized and characterized. The tetraprotonated form of this compound was evaluated as a receptor (R) for anion recognition of several substrates (S), Cl(-), PF(6)(-), HSO(4)(-), H(2)PO(4)(-) and carboxylates, such as p-nitrobenzoate (p-nbz(-)), phthalate (ph(2-)), isophthalate (iph(2-)) and dipicolinate (dipic(2-)). (1)H NMR titrations in CD(3)OD indicated that this receptor is not suitable for recognizing HSO(4)(-) and H(2)PO(4)(-), but weakly binds p-nbz(-), and strongly interacts with ph(2-), dipic(2-), and iph(2-) anions forming 1 : 2 assembled species. The largest beta(2) binding constant was determined for ph(2-), followed by dipic(2-) and finally iph(2-). The effect of the anionic substrates on the electron-transfer process of the ferrocene units of R was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) in methanol solution and 0.1 mol dm(-3)(CH(3))(4)NCl as the supporting electrolyte. Titrations of the receptor were undertaken by addition of anion solutions in their tetrabutylammonium or tetramethylammonium forms. The protonated ligand exhibits a reversible voltammogram, which shifts cathodically in the presence of the substrates. The data revealed kinetic constraints in the formation of the receptor/substrate entity for dipic(2-), ph(2-) and iph(2-) anions, but not for p-nbz(-). In spite of the slow kinetics of assembled species formation with the ph(2-) substrate, this anion provides the largest redox-response when the supramolecular entity is formed, followed by dipic(2-), iph(2-) and finally p-nbz(-) anions. This trend is in agreement with the (1)H NMR results and the values of the binding constants. Single crystal X-ray structures of the receptor with PF(6)(-), ph(2-), iph(2-) and p-nbz(-) were carried out and showed that supermolecules with a RS(2) stoichiometry are formed with the first three anions, but RS(4) with p-nbz(-). In all cases the binding occurs outside the macrocyclic cavity via N-H...O=C hydrogen bonds for carboxylate anions and N-H...F hydrogen bonds for the PF(6)(-) anion, which is in agreement with the solution results. The macrocyclic framework adopts different conformations in order to interact with each substrate having Fe...Fe intramolecular distances ranging from 10.125(14) to 12.783(15)A.
We report herein, the first generation of unsymmetrical ketone-derived chiral stabilized azomethine ylides. Intrairiolecular and intermolecular cycloaddition strategies have been utilized to synthesize both an enantiornerically pure bicyclic proline derivative and an enantionierically pure beta-hydroxy-alpha-amino acid.
Theoretical calculations have been carried out on the interactions of several endoperoxides which are potential antimalarials, including the clinically useful artemisinin, with two possible sources of iron in the parasite, namely the hexa-aquo ferrous ion [Fe(H2O)6]2+ and haeme.DFT calculations show that the reactions of all endoperoxides considered, with both sources of iron, initially generate a Fe–O bond followed by cleavage of the O–O bond to oxygen radical species. Subsequently, they can be transformed into carbon-centred radicals of greater stability. However, with [Fe(H2O)6]2+ as the iron source, the oxygen-centred radical species are more likely to react further akin to Fenton's reagent, whereby iron salts encourage hydrogen peroxide to act as an oxidizing agent, and that solvent plays a major role.In contrast, when reacting with haeme, the oxygen-centred radicals interconvert to more stable carbon-centred radicals, which can then alkylate haeme. Subsequent cleavage of the Fe–O bond leads to stable and inactive antimalarial products. These results indicate that the reactivity of the endoperoxides as antimalarials is greater with iron hexahydrates for radical-mediated damage as opposed to haeme, which leads to unreactive species. Since only nanomolar quantities of hydrated metal ions could catalyse the reactions leading to damage to the parasites, this could be an alternative or competitive reaction responsible for the antimalarial activity.
Two polymeric azido bridged complexes [Ni2L2(N-3)(3)](n)(ClO4). (1) and [Cu(bpdS)(2)(N-3)],(ClO4),(H2O)(2.5n) (2) [L = Schiff base, obtained from the condensation of pyridine-2-aldehyde with N,N,2,2-tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine; bpds = 4,4'-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and their crystal structures have been determined. Complex 1, C26H42ClN15Ni2O4, crystallizes in a triclinic system, space group P1 with a 8.089(13), b = 9.392(14), c = 12.267(18) angstrom, a = 107.28(l), b 95.95(1), gamma = 96.92(1)degrees and Z = 2; complex 2, C20H21ClCuN7O6.5S4, crystallizes in an orthorhombic system, space group Pnna with a = 10.839(14), b = 13.208(17), c = 19.75(2) angstrom and Z = 4. The crystal structure of I consists of 1D polymers of nickel(L) units, alternatively connected by single and double bridging mu-(1,3-N-3) ligand with isolated perchlorate anions. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data of the complex have been measured and the fitting,of magnetic data was carried out applying the Borris-Almenar formula for such types of alternating one-dimensional S = 1 systems, based on the Hamiltonian H = -J Sigma(S2iS2i-1 + aS(2i)S(2i+1)). The best-fit parameters obtained are J = -106.7 +/- 2 cm(-1); a = 0.82 +/- 0.02; g = 2.21 +/- 0.02. Complex 2 is a 2D network of 4,4 topology with the nodes occupied by the Cu-II ions, and the edges formed by single azide and double bpds connectors. The perchlorate anions are located between pairs of bpds. The magnetic data have been fitted considering the complex as a pseudo-one-dimensional system, with all copper((II)) atoms linked by [mu(1,3-azido) bridging ligands at axial positions (long Cu...N-3 distances) since the coupling through long bpds is almost nil. The best-fit parameters obtained with this model are J = -1.21 +/- 0.2 cm(-1), g 2.14 +/- 0.02. (c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2005).
The synthesis of the first example of a new class of tetradentate reagents for the efficient separation of americium(III) and europium(III) is reported together with the structure of the complex formed with europium(III).
Mixed ligand complexes: [Co(L)(bipy)] (.) 3H(2)O (1), [Ni(L)(phen)] (.) H2O (2), [Cu(L)(phen)] (.) 3H(2)O (3) and [Zn(L)(bipy)] (.) 3H(2)O (4), where L2- = two -COOH deprotonated dianion of N-(2-benzimidazolyl)methyliminodiacetic acid (H(2)bzimida, hereafter, H,L), bipy = 2,2' bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline have been isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, spectral and magnetic measurements and thermal studies. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show octahedral geometry for 1, 2 and 4 and square pyramidal geometry for 3. Equilibrium studies in aqueous solution (ionic strength I = 10(-1) mol dm(-3) (NaNO3), at 25 +/- 1 degrees C) using different molar proportions of M(II):H2L:B, where M = Co, Ni, Cu and Zn and B = phen, bipy and en (ethylene diamine), however, provides evidence of formation of mononuclear and binuclear binary and mixed ligand complexes: M(L), M(H-1L)(-), M(B)(2+), M(L)(B), M(H-1L)(B)(-), M-2(H-1L)(OH), (B)M(H-1L)M(B)(+), where H-1L3- represents two -COOH and the benzimidazole NI-H deprotonated quadridentate (O-, N, O-, N), or, quinquedentate (O-, N, O-, N, N-) function of the coordinated ligand H,L. Binuclear mixed ligand complex formation equilibria: M(L)(B) + M(B)(2+) = (B)M(H-1L)M(B)(+) + H+ is favoured with higher pi-acidity of the B ligands. For Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), these equilibria are accompanied by blue shift of the electronic absorption maxima of M(II) ions, as a negatively charged bridging benzimidazolate moiety provides stronger ligand field than a neutral one. Solution stability of the mixed ligand complexes are in the expected order: Co(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) > Zn(II). The Delta logK(M) values are less negetive than their statistical values, indicating favoured formation of the mixed ligand complexes over the binary ones. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
The crystal structure of 4-phenyl-benzaldehyde reveals the presence of a dimer linked by the C=O and C9-H groups of adjacent molecules. In the liquid phase, the presence of C-H...O bonded forms is revealed by both vibrational and NMR spectroscopy. A DeltaH value of -8.2 +/- 0.5 kJ mol(-1) for the dimerisation equilibrium is established from the temperature-dependent intensities of the bands assigned to the carbonyl-stretching modes. The NMR data suggest the preferential engagement of the C(2,6)-H and C(10/12)/C(11)-H groups as hydrogen bond donors, instead of the C(9)-H group. While ab initio calculations for the isolated dimers are unable to corroborate these NMR results, the radial distribution functions obtained from molecular dynamics simulations show a preference for C(2,6)-H and C(10/12)/C(11)-H...O contacts relative to the C(9)-H...O ones.
Four new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](CIO4)(2) (2), [(CuL3)(3)-(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(4)center dot H2O (3), and [(CuL4)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (4), where HL1 = 8-amino-4,7,7-trimethyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL3 = 7(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL4 = 4-methyl-7-(methylamino)-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, have been derived from the four tridentate Schiff bases (HL1, HL2, HL3, and HL4) and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. For all compounds, the cationic part is trinuclear with a CU3OH core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry; the equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen atom of the central OH group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from one ligand whereas an oxygen atom of a second ligand occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2+S2S3+S1S3) yielding as best-fit parameters: J = -66.7 and g = 2.19 for 1, J = -36.6 and g = 2.20 for 2, J = -24.5 and g = 2.20 for 3, and J = -14.9 and g = 2.05 for 4. EPR spectra at low temperature show the existence of spin frustration in complexes 3 and 4, but it has not been possible to carry out calculations of the antisymmetric exchange parameter, G, from magnetic data. In frozen methanolic solution, at 4 K, hyperfine splitting in all complexes and spin frustration in complex 4 seem to be confirmed. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of a new cyano-bridged one-dimensional iron (III)-gadolinium (III) compound, trans-[Gd(o-phen)(2)(H2O)(2)(mu-CN)(2)Fe(CN)(4)], - 2no-phen (o-phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been described. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic P (1) over bar space group with the following unit cell parameters: a = 10.538(14) angstrom, b = 12.004(14) angstrom, c = 20.61(2) angstrom, alpha = 92.41(1)degrees, beta = 92.76(1)degrees, gamma = 11 2.72(1)degrees, and Z = 2. In this complex, each gadolinium (III) is coordinated to two nitrile nitrogens of the CN groups coming from two different ferricyanides, the mutually trans cyanides of each of which links another different Gd-III to create -NC-Fe(CN)(4)-CN-Gd-NC- type 1-D chain structure. The one-dimensional chains are self-assembled in two-dimensions via weak C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds. Both the variable-temperature (2-300 K, 0.01 T and 0.8 T) and variable-field (0-50 000 Gauss, 2 K) magnetic measurements reveal the existence of very weak interaction in this molecule. The temperature dependence of the susceptibilities has been analyzed using a model for a chain of alternating classic (7/2) and quantum (1/2) spins. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Enzymes are powerful tools in organic synthesis that are able to catalyse a wide variety of selective chemical transformations under mild and environmentally friendly conditions. Enzymes such as the lipases have also found applications in the synthesis and degradation of polymeric materials. However, the use of these natural catalysts in the synthesis and the post-synthetic modification of dendrimers and hyperbranched molecules is an application of chemistry yet to be explored extensively. In this study the use of two hydrolytic enzymes, a lipase from Candida cylindracea and a cutinase from Fusarium solani pisii, were investigated in the selective cleavage of ester groups situated on the peripheral layer of two families of branched polyamides. These branched polyamides were conjugated to simple fragrances citronellol and L-menthol via ester linkages. Hydrolysis of the ester linkage between the fragrances and the branched polyamide support was carried out in aqueous buffered systems at slightly basic pH values under the optimum operative conditions for the enzymes used. These preliminary qualitative investigations revealed that partial cleavage of the ester functionalities from the branched polyamide support had occurred. However, the ability of the enzymes to interact with the substrates decreased considerably as the branching density, the rigidity of the structure and the bulkiness of the polyamide-fragrance conjugates increased.
The synthesis of a range of ditopic polyferrocenyl zinc(II) dithiocarbamate macrocyclic receptors containing ferrocene groups on the macrocycle's periphery and/or as part of the cyclic cavity is reported. The assemblies have been characterised by a range of spectroscopic techniques, electrochemical studies and in two cases by X-ray structure determination. The ability of these host systems to bind and sense electrochemically anionic guest species, isonicotinate and benzoate, and neutral 4-picoline guest was examined by 1H NMR and cyclic voltammetric titration studies. The strongest association was found between the isonicotinate anion and a dinuclear zinc(II) receptor whose macrocyclic cavity is of complementary size to complex this bidentate guest species in a cooperative manner. Cyclic voltammetric studies demonstrated that all receptors can electrochemically sense the binding of isonicotinate and benzoate via significant cathodic perturbations of the respective ferrocene redox couple.
The title compound, C21H28O4, a synthetic glucocorticoid, crystallizes with a single molecule in the asymmetric unit. Ring A is almost in a half-chair conformation, rings B and C are almost in chair conformations, and ring D is between a twist and a 13beta-envelope conformation. The A/B ring junction is quasi-trans, whereas the B/C and C/D ring junctions both approach trans characteristics. The molecule as a whole is slightly convex towards the beta side, with an angle of 9.60 (2) degrees between the C10-C19 and C13-C18 vectors. Molecular-packing and hydrogen-bonding (both intra- and intermolecular) interactions play a major role in the structural association of the compound.
A wide range of pseuclorotaxane assemblies containing positively charged pyridinium, pyridinium nicotinamide, imidazolium, benzimidazolium and guanidinium threading components, and macrocyclic isophthalamide polyether ligands have been prepared using a general anion templation procedure. In noncompetitive solvent media, coupling halide anion recognition by a macrocyclic ligand with ion-pairing between the halide anion and a strongly associated cation provides the driving force for interpenetration. Extensive solution H-1 NMR binding studies, thermodynamic investigations, and single-crystal X-ray structure determinations reveal that the nature of the halide anion template, strength of the ion-pairing between the anion template and the cationic threading component, and to a lesser extent favorable second sphere pi-pi aromatic stacking interactions between the positively charged threading component and macrocyclic ligand, together with macrocyclic ring size, affect the efficacy of pseudorotaxane formation.
Resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum and the unavailability of useful antimalarial vaccines reinforce the need to develop new efficacious antimalarials. This study details a pharmacophore model that has been used to identify a potent, soluble, orally bioavailable antimalarial bisquinoline, metaquine (N,N'-bis(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)benzene-1,3-diamine) (dihydrochloride), which is active against Plasmodium berghei in vivo (oral ID(50) of 25 micromol/kg) and multidrug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum K1 in vitro (0.17 microM). Metaquine shows strong affinity for the putative antimalarial receptor, heme at pH 7.4 in aqueous DMSO. Both crystallographic analyses and quantum mechanical calculations (HF/6-31+G) reveal important regions of protonation and bonding thought to persist at parasitic vacuolar pH concordant with our receptor model. Formation of drug-heme adduct in solution was confirmed using high-resolution positive ion electrospray mass spectrometry. Metaquine showed strong binding with the receptor in a 1:1 ratio (log K = 5.7 +/- 0.1) that was predicted by molecular mechanics calculations. This study illustrates a rational multidisciplinary approach for the development of new 4-aminoquinoline antimalarials, with efficacy superior to chloroquine, based on the use of a pharmacophore model.
Polymerizable macrocyclic biarylene−ether−ketones and biarylene−ether−sulfones are accessible from linear, bis(chloro)-terminated oligomers via nickel-catalyzed, intramolecular coupling under pseudo-high-dilution conditions. Single-crystal X-ray analyses of the resulting cyclo-oligomers reveal extremely distorted and highly strained geometries, with 4,4'-biphenylene units showing deviations of up to 70° from linearity.
