Collections held by the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle until now unstudied contain six species of Axiidea de Saint Laurent, 1979 and Gebiidea de Saint Laurent, 1979 from the Indo-west Pacific. Three species of Callianassidae Dana, 1852 are new: Calliax tulearensis n. sp., and Calliaxina thomassini n. sp. from Madagascar and Callianassa coriolisae n. sp. from the Philippines. Neocallichirus audax (de Man, 1911),Axianassa ngochoae Anker, 2010 and Gebiacantha richeri Ngoc-Ho, 1989 are reported for the first time from Vietnam. The new species are described and morphological variabilites in the others are discussed.
The names Gebiidea and Axiidea, erected by de Saint Laurent (1979), have priority over others for the two infraorders of shrimps previously included in Thalassinidea. Importantly, Thalassinidea are not monophyletic and the name should be replaced. Gebiidea and Axiidea, besides having priority and describing two monophyletic taxa, are now in common use (130 citations) and are more stable than alternative schemes proposed by Sakai (2005 and later). The history of the names of higher taxa applied to these groups is reviewed, and all family-group taxa listed.
Calastacus laurentae n. sp. is the second species of Calastacus from France and Europe besides C. laevis de Saint Laurent, 1972. The description is based on two small specimens collected on the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay, off Brittany (France). The holotype is nearly complete while the second specimen is much damaged with a missing carapace; it is not considered a paratype. Calastacus laurentae n. sp. differs from all known Calastacus species by having a pair of large distal spines on the rostrum and spinules on lateral borders of the telson. It can be distinguished from C laevis by the pereopod 1 bearing a small subdistal spine on both the upper and lower borders of the merus along with a fine longitudinal upper carina on the propodus; by contrast in C. laevis, there are one large upper spine and five large lower spines on the pereopod 1 meats and no upper carina on the propodus. Also in the new species, the terminal suture on the uropodal exopod is faint and unarmed while it is well defined and bears spinules in C. laevis.
The genus Thalassina Latreille, 1806, is currently considered as comprising two Recent valid species: Thalassina anomala (Herbst, 1804), type species, and Thalassina squamifera De Man, 1915, and the Australian fossil Thalassina emerii Bell, 1844. Nine species of Upogebiidae from the Dampier Archipelago, \Nestern Australia, one of which is new to science, arc studied in this work: Gebiacantha dampieri sp. nov., G. priochela Sakai, 1993, Upogebia austraJjensis de Man, 1927, U. balmaorum Ngoc-Ho, 1990, U. barbata (Strahl, 18(2), U. carinicauda (Stimpson, 18(0), U. darwinii (Miers, 1884), U. {allax de Man, 1905, and U. holthuisi Sakai, 1982. They arc compared with close relatives from the lndo-Pacific that include: U. bowerbankii (Miers, 1884), U. tractabilis (Hale, 1941), U. ancvlodactyla (de Man, 19(5), U. intermedia (de Man, 1888), resurrected as a v,llid species, and U. saintlaurentae sp. novo An identification key is presented. INTRODUCTION Nine species of Upogebiidae, one of which is new to science, recently collected from the Dampier Archipelago are reported in this work. The species represented are: Gebiacantha dampieri sp. nov., G. priochela Sakai, 1993, Upogebia australiensis de Man, 1927, U. balmaorum Ngoc-Ho, 1990, U. barbata (Strahl, 1862), U. carinicauda (Stimpson, 1860), U. darwinii (Miers, 1884), U. fal/ax de Man, 1905, and U. holthuisi Sakai, 1982. Three of these, i.e. U. balmaorum, U. holthuisi, U. fallax, nevertheless, include only a single specimen each and the identification of the first two is provisional. Except for the new taxon, all species are previously known from the Indo-Pacific, but variations exist in the Dampier fauna. The Dampier material is described, illustrated and compared with close relatives that include: U. bowerbankii iers, ] 884), U. tractabiIis (l1ale, 1941), U. ancylodactyla (de Man, 1905), U. intermedia (de Man, 1888), resurrected as a valid species, and U. saintlaurentae sp. novo The opportunity has been taken to study these species and include them in a kev. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material studied belongs to the collections of the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris (NMlIN), the National Museum of Victoria, Melbourne (NMV), the Western Australian Museum, Perth (WAM), and the Zoologisch Museum, Amsterdam (ZMA). The measurenwnts given in the description are: carapace ), given for all mens, measured from the tip of the rostrum to the posterior border of the carapace; total length. (tl), given for types or figured specimens, measured from the tip of the rostrum to the posterior border of the telson. Abbreviations are as follows: juv. for juvenile, juvs for juveniles, ovig. for ovigerous Figured specimens and appendages were stained with a weak solution of chlorazol black. If not otherwise stated, the anterior part of the carapace is figured in dorsal and lateral view respectively, the telson and uropods are figured in dorsal view and appendages in lateral view. 'The shape of the telson in the literature, however, especially its length /width ratio, could be inaccurate if the segment is not laid flat for drawing. In the present work, characters of the second pereopod, its propodus and dactylus, are also used although they do not vary specifically, which means that many species may have the same pereopod 2 morphology. Material recently collected from the Solomon Islands include three species of Acanthaxius Sakai & de Saint Laurent, 1989, two of which are new to science: A. clevai n. sp. and A. gadaletae n. sp. and a specimen of A. polyacantha Miyake & Sakai, 1967. Two specimens from New Caledonia are assigned to A. gadaletae n. sp. The new taxa are readily differentiated from A. polyacantha by their longer rostrum and the glabrous postcervical region of carapace. A. clevai n. sp. is characterized by a slender rostrum longer than the eyestalks, with two lateral and a suborbital spine, the gastric region with a median, submedian and lateral carina, setose pereopods 1 with three and two upper spines on the propodal palm and dactylus respectively, the telson longer than broad with three teeth and one spinule on the lateral border. A. gadaletae n. sp. is similar to A. clevai n. sp. but differs by the gastric region with two submedian carinae, the pereopod 1 with four upper spines both on the propodal palm and the dactylus, the maxilliped 3 basis with a large lower distal spine (absent in A. clevai n. sp.) and the abdominal pleura 3–5 with an anterior spinule (absent in A. clevai n. sp.).Trois espèces d’Acanthaxius Sakai & de Saint Laurent, 1989, dont deux nouvelles, des Iles Salomon et de Nouvelle Calédonie (Crustacea, Thalassinidea, Axiidae). The genus Neaxius Borradaile, 1903 of the family Strahlaxiidae Poore, 1994 includes five species. A new species, N. mclaughlinae n. sp., from the Gulf of Guinea, and the first record of the genus from the Atlantic, is herein presented. The new species is similar to N. vivesi (Bouvier, 1895) in having the lateral carinae of the gastric region bearing teeth on the anterior part; the second article of the antennal peduncle with upper and lateral spines; the telson approximately as broad as long with three carinae the distal one being well apart from the posterior border. The new species can be differentiated from N. vivesi by the unarmed upper border of the carpus and propodus of pereopod I as well as the unarmed lower border of the merus of pereopod 2 (all borders have spines in N. vivesi); the telson carinae straight and of the same length (distal carina shorter than the others in N. vivesi). Differentiating characters of the six species of Neaxius are presented.
The rare thalassinid shrimp, Eutrichocheles modestus (Herbst, 1796) is now recorded from South Vietnam. It was previously collected in Thailand and Malaysia, and was dealt with in Ngoc-Ho (1998) and Ngoc-Ho et al. (2005).The Vietnamese specimens are described in detail and variations are discussed. They are compared with specimens from Thailand and Malaysia, and with the female holotype of Eutrichocheles crosnieri Ngoc-Ho, 1998, also from Vietnam. Additional remarks, especially on the status of the latter species, are presented.A note on the habitat, fishery, and economic importance of E. modestus in Vietnam is provided. This study shows that the only female of E. modestus from Vietnam, as well as the one from Thailand, differ from the holotype of E. crosnieri by certain features, and no males examined can be assigned to this latter species. The two species are here kept separate, pending a future study of additional material, especially from the type locality of E. crosnieri.
New material discovered for the rare species Eutrichocheles modestus allows a detailed study and a comparison with its closely related congener. E. crosnieri Ngoc-Ho, 1998. The taxonomic status of Eutrichocheles Wood-Mason, 1876 and Paraxiopsis de Man, 1905 is discussed. The separation of the two, as proposed by Kensley (1996a), is accepted.
Du nouveau materiel des Iles Marquises et d'autres localites de Polynesie francaise a permis d'identifier 12 especes de Thalassinidea, cinq d'entre elles etant nouvelles. Il y a quatre especes d'Axiidae : Acanthaxius spinosissimus (Rathbun, 1906), Axiopsis pica Kensley, 2003, Axiopsis consobrina de Man, 1905, Calaxius sibogae (de Man, 1925) ; une de Strahlaxiidae : Neaxius trondlei n. sp. ; deux de Thomassiniidae : Crosniera dayrati n. sp., Mictaxius salvati n. sp. ; quatre de Callianassidae : Callianassa amboinensis de Man, 1888, Corallianassa coutierei (Nobili, 1904), Neocallichirus frouini n. sp., Cheramus sibogae (de Man, 1905) ; et une d'Upogebiidae : Gebiacantha albengai n. sp. Neaxius trondlei n. sp. se distingue par l'article 2 du pedoncule antennaire avec une ou deux epines dorsales et aucune epine laterale, le merus des pereiopodes 2 et 3 au bord ventral inerme, le telson aux trois carenes tranversales bien marquees et equidistantes. Crosniera dayrati n. sp. differe par un rostre triangulaire, non termine en pointe, les pedoncules oculaires non aplatis, aux cornees terminales, le telson et les uropodes allonges. Mictaxius salvati n. sp. est hermaphrodite et se caracterise aussi par le pleuron abdominal 1 au bord postero-ventral arrondi, le telson a peu pres quadrangulaire au bord posterieur presque rectiligne, l'exopodite des uropodes non bilobe. Neocallichirus frouini n. sp. se distingue par le grand pereiopode 1 a forte expansion ventrale au merus, le maxillipede 3 au propode non quadrangulaire. Gebiacantha albengai n. sp. se caracterise par un rostre presque deux fois plus long que large avec trois epines infrarostrales, une epine au bord anterolateral de la carapace, le propode du pereiopode 1 inerme a la face mesiale.
All genera and species from Europe and the Mediterranean are diagnosed or redescribed, differentiating characters are illustrated and an identification key is provided. A review of literature and biological information is included, and a classification, with two new genera, is proposed. The superfamily Axioidea comprises the Axiidae, with Axius stirhynchus, Calocarides coronatus, Levantocaris hornungae; and the Calocarididae with Calastacus laevis and Calocaris macandreae. The Callianassoidea include the Callianassidae, Ctenochelidae, Laomediidae and Upogebiidae. The Callianassidae contain three subfamilies. The Callianassinae have three species placed in Callianassa: C. acanthura, C. subterranea and C. truncata; three other species are assigned to a new genus, Pestarella n. gen.: P. candida n. comb., P. tyrrhena n. comb. and P. whitei n. comb. Pestarella n. gen. species have an operculiform Mxp3, a telson rounded in posterior half, and no Plp1-2 in male. The little known species Calliapagurops charcoti is placed in the Callichirinae. The Eucalliacinae contain two species: Calliax lobata and Calliaxina punica n. comb., type species of a new genus, Calliaxina n. gen. Species of Calliaxina n. gen. possess a rostrum with pointed tip, an operculiform Mxp3 with exopod,, the P1 equal and similar, and Plp1-2 with appendix interna in both male and female. The Ctenochelidae have one subfamily, Gourretinae with Gourrretia denticulata. The Laomediidae are re resented by one species, Jaxea nocturna, the Upogebiidae by seven species: Gebiacantha talismani, Upogebia deltaura, U. mediterranea, U. nitida, U. pusilla, U. stellata and U. tipica.
The genus Calliapagurops De Saint Laurent was established in 1973 for a new species, Calliapagurops charcoti, of which the holotype and only known specimen, collected at the Azores, was a badly damaged female without abdomen and pereiopods 4, 5. Four specimens belonging to a new species of Calliapagurops from the Philippines are described in this work. They confirm the validity of the genus and reveal its close relationship with certain genera of the subfamily Callichirinae Manning & Felder, 1991. The genus seems better placed in the latter subfamily than in the Calliapaguropinae, as proposed by Sakai (1999). This is discussed.
A new species of mud-shrimp of the genus Upogebia Leach, 1814 from Taiwan (Decapoda: Thalassinidea: Upogebiidae). Zoological Studies 40(3): 199-203, An Upogebia specimen collected from deep water off southern Taiwan is described as a new species, Upogebia edentata sp. nov.. The new species closely resembles U. fallax de Man, 1905; U. contigua Bozic and de Saint Laurent, 1972; and U. gracilis Ngoc-Ho, 1990, in its long rostrum and the shape of the 6th abdominal somite. However, it differs from these species by having both the rostrum and the lateral ridges of the carapace unarmed. Color figures of the new species are presented.
Six specimens d'Upogebiidae, provenant tous du Senegal et prealablement assignes a Upogebia nitida, sont decrits ici comme les types d'une espece nouvelle, Upogebia senegalensis n. sp. Le nouveau taxon ressemble a la fois a U. nitida et U. mediterraned avec lesquels il est compare. Il se distingue d'U. nitida par la forme triangulaire allongee du rostre ainsi que la spinulation du pereiopode 1 pourvu d'une epine ou dent dorsale subdistale au merus et au propode. Il differe d'U. mediterranea par le pereiopode 2 inerme et le telson legerement plus large que long. Une cle de determination des especes senegalaises d'Upogebia est presentee.
Le genre Wolffogebia a ete etabli par Sakai en 1982 et les especes qui y ont ete incluses sont discutees. Une diagnose revisee est presentee. Un abondant materiel recolte au Vietnam et appartenant a une nouvelle espece de Wolffogebia est decrit. Wolffogebia nhatrangensis n. sp. est compare aux autres especes du genre. Il differe par la presence de petites dents aux bords lateraux du rostre alors que le bord distal est inerme, et par la presence d'une spinule au bord anterolateral de la carapace. D'autre part, les mâles adultes presentent une serie de huit a 12 cretes obliques a la face mesiale du propode des chelipedes.
New material described recently permits the separation of six upogebiid species into the new genus Austinogebia , for which the diagnostic characters and a key are presented. The new taxon is compared to its close relative, Gebiacantha Ngoc-Ho, 1989, and the opportunity is taken to rediagnose the latter.
Trois especes d'Eutrichocheles Wood Mason, 1876 dont deux nouvelles, provenant de Polynesie francaise et du Vietnam sont decrites. Elles sont comparees aux taxons voisins et l'un de ces derniers, Eutrichocheles modestus (Herbst, 1796) est revu plus en detail ; une diagnose est presentee. L'etude du nouveau materiel conduit a quelques modifications dans la diagnose du genre Eutrichocheles.
Au genre Laomedia De Haan, s'ajoute une quatrieme espece actuelle, Laomedia paucispinosa n.sp., du Vietnam. Un nouveau materiel de Laomedia astacina De Haan, 1841, provenant de Chine, du Japon, de Taiwan, du Vietnam, l'holotype de Laomedia barronensis Ngoc-Ho et Yaldwyn, 1997, et un paratype de Laomedia healyi Yaldwyn et Wear, 1970, tous deux d'Australie, ont ete examines. La diagnose du genre et celle des especes actuelles sont presentees ainsi que leur description et une cle. Les adultes et les larves de Laomedia sont compares a ceux des autres genres de Laomediidae et une analyse phylogenetique fondee sur dix-sept caracteres revele deux subfamilles : les Laomeniinae et les Axianassinae.
Laomedia barronensis n.sp. du nord de Queensland est comparee a sa voisine geographique, L. healyi Yaldwyn et Wear, 1970 connue de l'est et du sud-est de l'Australie, et a L. astacina de Haan, 1841 recoltee au Japon, en Coree et en Chine. L. barronensis s'en distingue specialemenr par les pedoncules antennulaire et antennaire a peu pres de meme longueur, et par l'absence a la fois de l'epine postoculaire et de l'epine posterieure a la ligne thalassinienne. L'holotype et unique specimen connu de L. barronensis, une femelle ovigere, a ete recolte au-dessus du niveau de maree basse, a 1,5 m de profondeur, dans un systeme de galeries humides de Sesarma sur les bords vaseux de la riviere Barron, pres de Cairns, Queensland. Cette partie de la galerie aurait ete submergee a maree haute.
