The article discusses main contributions and results of the monograph Enrichment: A Critique of Commodities, written by the French sociologists Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre. Boltanski and Esquerre focus on the strategy to transform 'the past' (patrimony, luxury objects, tradition, collections) into new sources of richness. The book focuses on valuation forms and valuation discourses. Enrichment links Boltanski's work again to the socio-economic movement of the economics and sociology of conventions (in short, EC/SC), which is part of the new French social sciences and regards conventions as logics of valuation and interpretation. This approach of EC/SC is introduced as a frame to evaluate the recombination of pragmatism and structuralism which is proposed by Boltanski and Esquerre. Finally, open questions and desiderata are addressed from the standpoint of EC/SC.
Michel Foucault’s neostructural discourse analysis was developed in the context of the socalled »historical epistemology« (or »French epistemology«). The argument of this contribution is that discourse analysis needs to be based on the core concepts of historical epistemology. These can be conceived of as methodological concepts for Foucault’s discourse analysis. The main concepts as epistemological break, epistemological obstacle and phenomenotechnology are introduced and related to discourse analysis. One consequence is the need of a specific form of hermeneutics, which has to be different from subjectivist and phenomenological forms of interpretation is emphasized. Also, the critique against historical epistemology in France articulated by Bruno Latour as well as the defense of historical epistemology as formulated by Mary Tiles and Pierre Bourdieu is presented. The need for self-objectivation and self-reflection of discourse analysis as method and practice is introduced. The article concludes that, so far, outside of France the main methodological positions of Foucault’s discourse analysis have not been successfully established.
The contribution approaches methodological problems and issues of philosophy of science from the perspective of economics of convention (EC, also named convention theory). EC is part of the new French pragmatic social sciences, which recombine the two megaparadigms structuralism and pragmatism in a new way, making pragmatism again a much stronger influence. Convention theory emphasizes the pragmatic and pluralist normativity of social coordination. For this conventions as logics of interpretation, evaluation and valuation are necessary foundational structures for actors and processes. The contribution introduces the concept of quality conventions and the model of worlds of production. Scientific collectivities, paradigms and scientific movement can be seen as moral collectivities, grounding research and scientific practices on conventions as normative orders. This way, convention theory links data to values and measurement to normativities, instead of separating them. EC is then applied to problems of measurement, quantification, categorization and the coordination of survey, arguing that these are based on conventions. Also big data as phenomena is discussed from EC's perspective.

The sociology of quantification is an emerging field, in which different disciplines are engaged to study the quantification processes in different social realms, their effects and usages, but also the plurality of underlying principles and logics of quantification. The science movement of economics of conventions (in short EC) is one of the most important strands, which contributed to the sociology of quantification. EC has identified, how quantification and measurement is based on measurement conventions. These conventions link numbers, but also categories and data in general to a common good. This way, EC can be conceived of as a link between the sociological analysis of processes of quantification (and categorization) to public issue, debates and concerns. It is for this link that EC can be regarded also as a contribution to public sociology. The contribution presents the plurality of conventions and introduces concepts of EC as quality conventions or data worlds.
The contribution introduces to the transdisciplinary approach of economic of conventions (in French économie des conventions, in short EC or "convention theory"). EC can be conceived of as a core part of new French economic sociology and as a complex (neo)pragmatist institutionalism. Conventions are institutional logics, on which actors rely on in situation of economic coordination. EC assumes a coexisting plurality of conventions, which structure economic production, distribution and consumption. The contribution presents the most important notions of conventions as well as their systematization, worked out by convention theory. Also, major studies are reviewed and important contributions to the field of economic sociology are sketched as EC's approach to the analysis of "political economy of quantification" and EC's contribution to an "economic sociology of law".
In this interview, Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre introduce their book Enrichment and core concepts for the analysis of new developments in contemporary capitalism. The study focuses the analysis of the enrichment economy, which is grasped as a new form to explore and exploit ‘the past’ as a source for capitalist profits. The interview presents forms of valuation, which are more general principles of how value and prices can be ascribed to goods. The approach of Boltanski and Esquerre assumes an organized plurality of such forms of valuation. Also, the two sociologists stress the importance of discourses of valuation, which bring these forms of valuation into operation. As the interview makes evident, one major aim is to present a new perspective on the relationship between values, prices, and practices how prices are legitimatized or criticized on the basis of discourses of valuation. The interview situates Enrichment in the context of other contemporary sociological works, which focus on the economic core issue of value and valuation. The book can also be recognized as a proposal to reconcile structuralism and pragmatism in sociology. At the end of the interview, the more recent outcomes of the continuing collaborative work of Boltanski and Esquerre after Enrichment are discussed.

The contribution relies on the French institutionalist approach of economics of convention (EC). This approach was developed in the analysis of statistics, categorization, and quantification and links the issue of data generation to the question of the common good. EC focuses on how data quality is grounded in (measurement) conventions and how data serves social collectives for the pursuing of a common good. EC can be regarded as a neopragmatist approach, which points to the plurality of data worlds and the upcoming tensions between conventions as different institutional logics, how to generate, evaluate, interpret and use data in situations. Big data and algorithms bring in new tensions in situations because of its (mostly) opaque character of data generation. The emerging issues at stake are how data quality and its link to the common good can be evaluated by civic and collective actors. More and more realms of society are governed by private companies, whose data generation, collection and analysis are based on privately owned and invisible algorithms. As the relevance of digital platforms and social media grows, so does the power of governance that such entities have on society and social life. A key to understanding this influence is the ability of digital actors to regulate effectively, be it through (automated) enforcement of rules or their law-making potential. This contribution mobilizes the convention-based notion of data worlds and the critical capacities of their actors to explain conflicts and coordinative action in different areas of algorithmic regulation. The approach, which is based on situations of uncertainty, will be exemplarily applied to different areas of content moderation as well as payment, public administration and legal tech services.
The notion of convention is a core notion of the interdisciplinary and international movement of economics and sociology of conventions (in short EC/SC). This chapter presents developments, models, and different notions of the name-giving concept of “convention.” EC/SC can be conceived as a complex pragmatist institutionalism, which explains coordination, evaluation, and interpretation in situations by referring to conventions. This way, conventions can be regarded as institutional logics for the valuation or valorization of goods, actions, and persons. An early application of EC/SC has been the sociology of quantification and categorization, where conventions are analyzed as the basis for measurement. EC/SC has built up its perspective on conventions on two foregoing notions, which were introduced by KeynesKeynes, John M and Lewis. EC/SC assumes that real situations are governed by a plurality of coexisting conventions. Therefore, a set of models have been worked out, which systematize conventions as logics of evaluation, valuation, and interpretation. This chapter presents how EC/SC approaches the stability and dynamics of conventions and concludes by pointing to EC/SC as a contemporary reconciliation of pragmatism and structuralism.
