The Society for Information Management's 45th Annual IT Issues and Trends study received responses from 704 IT executives, including 211 CIOs and 344 unique organizations. AI continued its rise to reach the top of the most important IT management issues, followed by Cybersecurity, and Alignment of IT and Business. 54.2% of organizations reported increasing IT headcount, the lowest percentage since 2020. 90.5% reported increases in average IT salaries, down from 97.0% in 2024. The most common criteria for assessing CIO performance were Customer Satisfaction, Value of IT to the Business, Strategic Contribution of IT, IT Availability and Cybersecurity Issues. Interestingly, Cost Control dropped out of the top five to 22nd. The average tenure of CIOs was 7.4 years (median 5years), with 46.2% reporting to the CEO. CIOs continue to come primarily from outside the organization at high levels (80.3%), with 22.3% coming from prior non-IT positions.
The Society for Information Management's 43rd Annual IT Issues and Trends Study received responses from 671 IT executives, including 251 CIOs and 436 unique organizations. The average revenue of participating organizations was $5.3 billion (median $500 million). IT spending as a percentage of revenue was 6.8%, up significantly from 2022. However, though 64.2% of organizations reported increasing IT headcount, this is significantly lower than the 74.6% high in 2022 but more consistent with that reported in 2021. Continuing a five-year upward trend, 95.9% of organizations reported increases in average IT salaries. The top five IT management issues for organizations in 2022 were Alignment, Cybersecurity, Daya Analytics, Digital Transformation and Compliance; the top five largest IT investments were Analytics, Cybersecurity, Application Development, Cloud and ERP; while the five most-difficult-to-find technical s were Cybersecurity, Analytics, Business Analyst, Cloud and Functional Area Knowledge. The most common criteria for assessing CIO performance were Internal Customer Satisfaction, Value of IT to the Business, Cost Control/Reduction - IT, Availability/Up-Time and Cybersecurity. The average tenure of CIOs was 6.3 years (median 4.2 years), with 46.9% reporting to the CEO. CIOs continue to come from outside organizations at record levels (81.3%) and 22.4% came from prior non-IT positions.(1)
PurposeThe purpose of this research is to propose and empirically validate a theoretical framework to investigate the willingness of the elderly to disclose personal health information (PHI) to improve the operational efficiency of AI-integrated caregiver robots.Design/methodology/approachDrawing upon Privacy Calculus Theory (PCT) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), 274 usable responses were collected through an online survey.FindingsEmpirical results reveal that trust, privacy concerns, and social isolation have a direct impact on the willingness to disclose PHI. Perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), social isolation, and recognized benefits significantly influence user trust. Conversely, elderly individuals with pronounced privacy concerns are less inclined to disclose PHI when using AI-enabled caregiver robots.Practical implicationsGiven the pressing need for AI-enabled caregiver robots due to the aging population and a decrease in professional human caregivers, understanding factors that influence the elderly's disclosure of PHI can guide design considerations and policymaking.Originality/valueConsidering the increased demand for accurate and comprehensive elder services, this is the first time that information disclosure and AI-enabled caregiver robot technologies have been combined in the field of healthcare management. This study bridges the gap between the necessity for technological improvement in caregiver robots and the importance of transparent operational information by disclosing the elderly's willingness to share PHI.
Effective contact tracing is an important tool in trying to control the spread of highly infectious diseases. Utilizing the theory of reasoned action and rational choice theory, this study explores factors impacting the adoption of mobile contact tracing application. Findings indicate that perceived benefits of usage and perceived costs of non-usage positively impact an individual’s attitude toward usage intention, while information security concern as perceived cost of usage has a negative effect.
Smart contract applications are currently implemented in healthcare, but further research is needed to investigate their adoption by embracing a privacy perspective. This study fills this research gap by exploring smart contracts' adoption in healthcare through a privacy calculus model integrated with technical, legal, and social factors. The authors explore two specific applications: smart contracts implementing immune certificates (SC-ICs) to fight a healthcare crisis and smart contracts encoding and storing electronic health records (SC-EHRs) in the absence of such a crisis. Data are collected through a survey, and partial least square modeling is used to test the research hypotheses. The results provide significant contributions for academics and practitioners by showing how the influence of technical, legal, and social factors on privacy evaluations and privacy calculus evaluations themselves differ in the case of different applications of the same technology, i.e. SC-ICs and SC-EHRs because of the peculiar healthcare scenario.
Overly detailed and technical descriptions for IT positions, together with inconsistent occupation identifiers, cause companies to pass on qualified candidates who do not match every requirement, while job seekers fail to identify roles matching their skill sets. To address this matching problem, we analyzed 15,000+ IT job postings to create a list of 41 IT occupations, called ITOcc List. Leveraging this list will enable companies to attract a wider range of qualified candidates, and job seekers to more easily identify relevant openings.
Social network services (SNSs) have attracted more than 4.3 billion users worldwide. However, many feel SNSs have had an overall negative impact on society. This study utilizes the theory of reasoned action and rational choice theory to explore factors impacting SNS continuance. In addition, the study explores the moderating effect of commitment (i.e., whether an individual is considering leaving their SNS), on factors impacting continuance intention. Using 492 responses collected using MTurk, findings indicate that perceived benefits (i.e., enjoyment and learning) and the costs of non-usage (i.e., fear of missing out (FoMO)) positively impact an individual’s attitude toward SNS continuance while the cost of usage (i.e., privacy concerns) has a negative effect. Also, commitment was found to significantly affect the impact of FoMO on attitudes toward continuance. This study makes several significant contributions both to theory and practice related to individuals evolving perspectives on SNS usage.
Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain are complex digital technologies characterized by a strong connection and dependency between individuals, data, and information technology (IT). A socio-technical perspective that captures the dynamic interaction of social, legal, and technical artifacts is essential to understanding the IoT and blockchain phenomena. This review provides direction for employing a social-technical perspective across IoT and blockchain studies. The findings lead to new insights for developing a theoretical framework, research model, and research agenda to investigate IoT and blockchain technology. Practitioners and institutions can use these findings to develop strategies to promote the adoption of IoT and blockchain technologies through specific technical, legal, and social strategies. Overall, this research is unique in its attempt to trace new trajectories for future IS scholars and practitioners facing the complexity of IoT and blockchain.

The average revenue of participating organizations was $6.1 billion (median $400 million). IT spending as a percentage of revenue was 5.9%, up slightly from 2021 but close to the 10-year average of 5.7%. However, 74.6% of organizations reported increasing IT headcount, a 10-year high and up from 63.6% in 2021. Similarly, 94.8% reported increases in average IT salaries. The top five IT management issues for or-ganizations in 2022 were Cybersecurity, Alignment, Analytics, Compliance and Digital Transformation; the top five largest IT investments were Analytics, Cybersecurity, Cloud, Application Development and ERP; while the five most difficult to find soft skills were Critical Thinking, Teamwork, Business Acumen, Leadership and Problem Solv -ing. The most common criteria for assessing CIO performance were Value of IT to the Business, Internal Customer Satisfaction, Cybersecurity, Strategic Contribution of IT and IT Availability. The average tenure of CIOs was 5.9 years (median 4 years) with 48% reporting to the CEO. CIOs continue to come from outside organizations at record levels (82%), and 24.6 came from prior non-IT positions.1
This research investigates the social, legal, and technological factors that affect the adoption of Internet of Things wearable devices (WIoT) among young adults during and before a healthcare crisis. The study develops a technological acceptance model by integrating the Technological-Personal-Environmental (TPE) framework with new constructs, i.e. regulatory environment, epidemic ecosystem, perceived social usefulness, and WIoT devices’ technical characteristics. A research survey is developed and distributed to undergraduate and graduate students in a major university located in the USA. The research hypotheses are tested by using partial least square modeling. Results of the analysis lead to significant contributions for both academics and practitioners.
IT spending levels are returning from the Covid-induced highs of 2020. This is consistent with many other findings in 2021, including the percentage of organizations increasing both IT headcount and salaries. The top five IT management issues for organizations in 2021 were Cybersecurity, Alignment, Analytics, Digital Transformation and Compliance; the top five largest IT investments were Cloud, Analytics, Cybersecurity, Application Development and ERP; while the five hardest to find IT technical skills were Cybersecurity, Analytics, AI, Functional Knowledge and Cloud. The most common criteria for assessing CIO performance were User Satisfaction (Internal), Value of IT to the Business, Strategic Contribution of IT, IT Availability and Cybersecurity. The average tenure of CIOs is six years (median four) with almost 47% reporting to their CEO. A ten-year low of 22.6% report to their CFO. CIOs continue to come from outside organizations at record levels (again over 80%) and 24.1% came from prior non-IT positions, down significantly from the 2019 high of 31.1%.(1)
Coproduction is defined as collaboration between an organization and the consumer in the design, marketing, or delivery of goods or services, which the consumer ultimately utilizes. While coproduction has existed for decades, the transition from a full-service to a coproduction environment, if not handled correctly, can be met with apprehension, resistance, or resentment by the consumer. The impact of coproduction resentment has received limited attention in information systems research. This study highlights the importance of including coproduction in the nomological net and explores the impact of coproduction resentment on continuance intention within the context of self-service technology, in particular self-checkout. A sample of 309 responses from individuals in the United States was collected using a survey instrument and crowdsourcing. Utilizing the IS continuance model as the theoretical lens, results indicate that coproduction resentment has a negative impact on both consumer satisfaction and continuance intention.
