During the last decade or so, Greenman’s work has focused on in vitro continuous culture models of biofilms, (perfusion biofilms) where the microcosm is derived from natural sources including human oral cavity, skin, wound infections, urine and anaerobic sludge and has used the in vitro models for both biomedical and environmental purposes. With regard to the latter, he has been actively researching Microbial Fuel Cells (since 2005) and has obtained EPSRC, EU, and TSB funding for his research in this area. Over the last 10 years, Greenman (working with Ieropoulos) has been either principal investigator or co-investigator of a number of externally funded research projects. Over his whole career he has published ~200 research papers, 12 book chapters, one patent, and has co-edited the proceedings of two international conferences, has served on two editorial boards of Journals and continues to review for grant awarding agencies. He has refereed papers in microbiology and biotechnology areas for several journals (>12) over this time. Greenman has graduated over 35 PhD students, 20 of these as director of studies and first supervisor.
Much of his applied research over the years is in collaboration with industry, resulting in many contracts and grants.
