I was born in 1955 in Regensburg, Germany. I am married and have 3 daughters. I was a member of the Artificial Intelligence Group of Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung, Sankt Augustin, from 1984 to 1994 and visiting researcher at the International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, CA, from 1991 to 1992. In January 1995 I became full professor for Knowledge Based Systems at the Technical University of Vienna. Since September 1996 I am chair for Intelligent Systems at the University of Leipzig where I was heading the doctoral programme in knowledge representation from 1998 to 2008. Since 2002 I am an ECCAI Fellow selected by the European Coordinating Committee of Artificial Intelligence.
