For innovative research in network security, privacy, and reliability that has taught us to view attacks and attackers as elements of an integrated technological, societal, and economic system. In the last decade, as we have grown increasingly dependent on the Internet, the Internet has become a vehicle for large-scale attacks via worms, viruses, botnets, massive flooding attacks, and the like. Through a long series of highly creative projects on network security, privacy, and reliability, Stefan has shown how we can and should analyze Internet attacks and attackers as elements of an integrated technological, societal, and economic system. More specifically, Stefan has looked at problems such as spam not purely in technical terms, but also using technical data to understand the economic and social structures underlying the attackers. The hypothesis is that rather than continuing to separately defeat each new threat or attack, our defenses could be much more effective by understanding the "value chain" of the adversary -- the relationships and dependencies that the attacker utilizes in order to make the attack successful --and using this knowledge to guide any intervention.
