RESEARCH SUMMARY
A primary area of my research focuses on the intersection of cardiovascular disease, geriatrics, and digital health. While there has been rapid growth in cardiac-oriented digital health products, there is still limited understanding of their effectiveness in older patients. My research therefore applies principles from clinical trials to study how specific digital health interventions influence function, quality of life, and cardiovascular events. I am currently the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded RESILIENT study (R01 AG062520), a multi-center randomized trial to evaluate engagement and outcomes with a digital health cardiac rehabilitation program in older adults with ischemic heart disease. In a second NIH-funded trial, BETTER-BP (R01 HL148275), we are evaluating whether a smartphone-delivered behavioral health intervention can improve adherence with antihypertensive medications.
I also perform observational research on how geriatric impairments influence outcomes in cardiac patients. As a Co-Investigator on the NIH-funded SILVER-AMI study, I helped to develop risk models for mortality and hospital readmission after myocardial infarction in patients over 75 years of age. Using these data we developed silverscore.org, which is the only myocardial infarction risk calculator exclusively tailored to an older adult population.
