Paula Ferreira is a member of the Immunobiology group at i3S -Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde and Associate Professor of Immuno-Physiology and Pharmacology Department, and Director of the Laboratory of Immunology at ICBAS-Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, from Porto University. She is a Professor of Immunology. She obtained her PhD degree from Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, in 1997 and she remained on the faculty as Auxiliary Professor until 2003 when she assumed her present position.
Paula Ferreira has had an abiding interest in understanding the mechanisms by which pathogenic microorganisms interact with the host immune system in order to succeed in their colonization. Her research work ultimately aims at development of immune protective or therapeutic approaches against Group B Streptococcus (GBS)-induced neonatal diseases (sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis). Research carried out by her team showed that extracellular protein produced by this microbe interfere with the host immune response by inducing a promptly production of IL-10, an anti-inflammatory/immunosuppressor cytokine. This extracellular protein was identified as the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). Moreover, it was also showed that immunization with this extracellular protein confers protection to the host against a subsequent infectious challenge with the microbe. New therapeutic approaches beyond antibacterial treatment to manage neonatal sepsis outcome is mandatory and adenosine triphosphate signaling is gaining further attention in systemic inflammation/infection, neuroinflammation research field. Tissue damage and inflammation leads to an increase in systemic extracellular ATP concentration that it is detected by P2 purinergic receptors (P2R). The main immunoregulatory of P2R is the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) that is expressed in innate and adaptive immune cells. In parallel, P2X7R has been identified as a key player in the neuroinflammatory cascade, controlling the onset progression of a wide range of neurological conditions and in the pathophysiological processes involved in sepsis. Therefore more recently she is addressing the therapeutic potential of P2X7R signaling on neonatal bacterial diseases.
