I was born in 25 of Jully of 1989, and since I was a little child I felt fascinated by the natural world. As such I decided to join the group of scientist that dedicate themselves to the study of biology. To this end I began my academic education in 2007, with a 1st cycle of studies in Genetics and Biotechnology, which provided me with a solid background in molecular biology and, also, my first contact with scientific research. During the internship I tested the efficiency of a new protocol to obtain protoplasts of Catharanthus roseus, Mentha spicata and Thimus mastichina. This work was performed under supervision of Professor Fernanda Leal, in the Laboratory of In Vitro Plant Tissue Culture.
After that I took a 2nd cycle in Biotechnology applied to the Health Sciences. Under supervision of PhD. Filomena Adega (filadega@utad.pt) and Professor PhD. Raquel Chaves (rchaves@utad.pt), I embarked in a master research project that aimed to characterize cytogenetically and at the gene expression level (the genes analysed were Erbb2 and Mycn) a Rattus norvegicus mammary tumour cell model named, CLS-ACI-1.
Following I worked at the Institute for Molecular and cell Biology - IBMC, under supervision of PhD Renata Freitas (renata.freitas@ibmc.up.pt) in a project entitled “Shaping animal design: role of Hoxd13 targets in the development of vertebrate limbs.” We aimed to characterize how hoxd13 modulation affects its downstream targets using a zebrafish (Danio rerio) transgenic line that allows overexpression of this gene at specific time points.
My PhD allowed me to broaden my knowledge on animal development and how cis-regulatory elements impact morphology. My PhD research was performed at the Max-Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tubingen (Germany) under supervision of Dr. Frank Chan.
Currently I am starting my Post-doctoral research at the Boston Childrens hospital/Harvard Medical School were I intend to study how bioelectricity informs and impacts bone development and regeneration.
