António Jorge R. F. Guiomar (born in 1966) is an Auxiliary Researcher with teaching duties at the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal, and a researcher at CIEPQPF – Chemical Process Engineering and Forest Products Research Centre, a UC I&D research unit. He has started his academic career in 1989 at the Department of Chemistry at UC as a Junior Researcher with teaching duties. In 1991, moved to the Department of Biochemistry of the same university becoming a Research Assistant with teaching duties and, in 1998, became an Auxiliary Researcher with teaching duties. Since 2009 he is an Auxiliary Researcher with teaching duties at the Department of Life Sciences of the same university.
He has a BSc degree in Biochemistry (UC, Portugal, 1987; dissertation: “Immobilization of alpha-Chymotrypsin and Cellulase onto Polymeric Supports”, an MSc degree in enzyme amperometric biosensors (University of Leeds, UK, 1989), with a dissertation titled “Immobilized Cholesterol Oxidase in Amperometric Biosensors”, and a PhD degree on the application of self-assembled monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett films to the study of immobilized enzymes (University of Leeds, UK, 1997), with a dissertation titled “The Influence of the Micro-Environment on the Structure and Activity of Immobilised Glucose Oxidase”.
His main research interests lie in the area of biomaterials, in particular, controlled drug release, bio/hemocompatibility of materials, attachment of biomolecules to surfaces, modification and characterization of polymers, and surface modification and characterization. He has participated, as researcher or supervisor of research, in 15 financed research projects (including 2 international projects), being the coordinator of the UC teams in 5 research projects (including 1 international project).
He has co-authored research papers and two book chapters in the areas of:
i) enzyme immobilization;
ii) enzyme-based biosensors;
iii) use of self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols on gold and of Langmuir-Blodgett films as model surfaces for studies with immobilized enzymes;
iv) synthesis and hemocompatibility evaluation of polyurethanes;
v) electrospun nanofiber mats for biocatalysis;
vi) biofunctionalization of inorganic nanoparticles/nanowires for cell labelling and sorting;
vii) controlled drug release for ophthalmological and wound dressing applications; and
viii) metabolic studies of Cr(VI)-induced cancer.
He has been the supervisor or co-supervisor of final year research projects of the BSc in Biochemistry, of MSc thesis in Biochemistry and in Chemical Engineering, and co-supervisor of a PhD thesis in Chemical Engineering, with work in the areas of:
i) hemocompatibility of polyurethanes and of model surfaces of self-assembled monolayers of organothiols on gold;
ii) hydrogels for wound dressings;
iii) controlled drug release from commercial soft contact lenses, from polyacrylate films for contact lenses, and from hydrogels for wound dressings;
iv) immobilization of enzymes onto polymers;
v) surface modification of polymers;
vi) modification of paper surfaces for improved ink jet printing; and
vii) metabolic studies of cells exposed to Cr(VI).
As a lecturer, he has been lecturing since 1990. Currently, he is the lecturer of a course unit of the MSc in Biochemistry titled "Biocompatibility of Biomaterials". In the past, he has lectured the following course units:
i) Biomaterials (MSc in Biochemistry, UC; 2007/2008 to 2019/2020)
ii) Biomaterials (BSc in Biochemistry, UC; lecturer: 2000/2001 to 2006/2007; co-lecturer: 1992/1993 to 1999/2000)
iii) Biomaterials (MSc in Biochemical Engineering, UC; co-lecturer; 2000/2001 to 2002/2003)
iv) “Introduction to the Biochemistry Laboratory” (BSc in Biochemistry; 2020/2021 and 2016/2017)
v) "Biochemistry Laboratories I" (BSc in Biochemistry, 2007/2008 to 2009/2010)
vi) "Enzymology and Biocatalysis" (MSc in Biochemical Engineering, UC; 2000/2001 to 2002/2003
vii) "Polymer Chemistry I" (BSc in Chemistry, UC; 1990/1991).
He has participated in a project on science outreach to primary school students, organizing laboratorial workshops on Materials in a local primary school.
Concerning institutional management activities, he was the UC Erasmus coordinator of the Biochemistry area 2005 and 2020, a member of the committee that created the MSc in Biochemical Engineering (1998) and a member of its scientific committee (2000 – 2005), and was a member of the committee for the self-evaluation of the BSc in Biochemistry (2002 – 2008).
