My research engages high-energy matter-antimatter and matter-matter particle colliders and multipurpose detector technologies to seek an improved understanding of the basic constituents of our Universe and the forces that govern their interactions. Many of my research interests have involved the bottom (b, or beauty) quark, a unique fundamental particle with an electric charge of −1/3 and a mass about five times that of a proton, to further our understanding of Nature through its strong and electroweak interactions. We study b quarks by examining how they are created from energy, how they combine with other quarks to form hadrons, and how they change flavour to become lighter (charm or up) quarks. We also use b quarks, as decay products, to study much heavier particles like the top (t, or truth) quark and the Higgs boson, which we discovered in 1995 and 2012, respectively. From 2007-2013, I led the Canadian Collider Detector at Fermilab CDF-II group, consisting of researchers from TRIUMF and four Canadian universities. We contributed to studies of t quarks and quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and to the first published evidence for Higgs bosons.
I am now investing efforts in the ATLAS experiment on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the Belle II experiment on the SuperKEKB Collider at KEK. We have responsibilities related to the high-level jet trigger, upgraded muon detection hardware, and collider beam-background monitoring. My ATLAS physics interests and contributions lie in the use of jet and photon signatures in precision measurements and searches for exotic physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. excited quarks and microscopic or quantum black holes. My Belle II interests include the study of b quarks to probe for new physics at energy scales higher than those attainable by the LHC, using a trick of quantum mechanics.
