Beside IR spectroscopy, he has been a pioneer since 1973 in the use of UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy for the study of the surface species and surface states. The contributions in this area are internationally recognized. Due to the complexity of the surface phenomena, which require a multi-technique approach, he developed also in situ Raman and EPR. More recently, EXAFS and XANES studies were performed. In conclusion a multi-technique laboratory for the study of adsorbed species (NIS centre of excellence) has been constructed, where 5 generations of students and researchers have been educated under the guidance of A.Z.. Many of these students are now full professors, associated professors and researchers, not only at University of Turin but also in other Universities (not only Italian). Contributions which merit a special mention deal with the study of the surface and catalytic properties of zeolites, that have definitely established the international reputation of A.Z. During these investigations operando techniques were developed for the first time. These investigations have also stimulated the simultaneous use of ab initio computer simulations, so completing the multi-technique approach mentioned above. A.Z. is coauthor of about 450 papers and 5 reviews published on the main journals of Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Surface Science and Catalysis (ISI h-index: 92; citations: about 25000 ). He is editor of 2 books published by Wiley-VCH. ” The Development of Catalysis. A History of Key Processes and Personas in Catalytic Science and Technology” with S.Califano and Selective Nanocatalysts and “Nanoscience: Concepts for Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Catalysis with Silvia Bordiga and Elena Groppo. He is also a painter and author of a book entitled “Alchimie nell’arte” (Zanichelli Ed). He collaborates with La Chimica e l’industria , with Huffington Post and l’Indice on subject of general culture.
