Dr. Aikichi Iwamoto, MD, DMSc, is a professor of the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo (IMSUT). He heads the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Advanced Clinical Research Center of IMSUT. His major interest lies in virological and immunological aspects of HIV pathogenicity, HIV tropism, etc. He has been in charge of patient care twice weekly at the HIV outpatient clinic of IMSUT’s Research Hospital for over 16 years. He served as the hospital director from 2003 to 2006. Professor Iwamoto chairs the National HIV Surveillance Committee in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan since 2005. He served as the President of the Japanese Society for AIDS Research (JSAR) from 2005 to 2006. He is the current President of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases since 2009. Internationally, he is the current Regional Representative (Asia and the Pacific Islands) of the International AIDS Society (IAS), a member of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Infectious Diseases (JID), a core faculty member of the IAS-USA and an advisory board member of Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ). Since 2009 he co-chairs AIDS panel of US-Japan Cooperative Medical Science Program currently with Professor Ruth Ruprecht. From 1999 to 2004 he contributed to the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA’s) Project for Strengthening of Thai NIH Capabilities for Research and Development on AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases. In that project, he contributed as an HIV/AIDS expert and sent his colleagues to collaborate and assist the HIV Day Care Center in Lampang Hospital in northern Thailand. Since 2005, he is the Director of IMSUT's Research Center for Asian Infectious Diseases and has directed a cooperative project between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and IMSUT establishing Japan-China joint laboratories in Beijing for emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. He is a visiting professor of Institute of Microbiology, CAS. The Japan-China joint project has been in its 2nd phase (2010-2014) supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. He is a winner of 2010 Award for International Science Collaboration of CAS.
