Bio
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Ali Cemal Benim received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the Bosphorus University, Istanbul, Turkey. The subject of his Master Thesis was Finite Element Modeling of Navier-Stokes Equations.
He earned his Ph.D. degree at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, at the Institute of Process Engineering and Power Plant Technology of the Faculty of Energy Technology. The topic of his PhD Thesis was Finite Element Modeling of Turbulent Flames, which was awarded by the grade Degree of Distinction.
After his PhD, he spent a post-doctoral period at the University of Stuttgart, during which he performed research on computational procedures for flows and flames, on turbulence and combustion modeling, on the one hand, and taught courses on finite element methods in fluid flow and heat transfer, on the other hand.
Following this post-doctoral period at the University of Stuttgart, he joined ABB Turbo Systems Ltd. in Baden, Switzerland. In the Thermal Machinery Laboratory, which acted as an R&D department for the whole ABB enterprise, he gained experience on a broad range of industrial applications in the area of fluid flow, heat transfer and combustion, with emphasis on gas turbine combustion, gas and steam turbines. The modeling was mainly performed by finite volume method based general-purpose Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes, with in-house developments and adaptions for the engineering problem in hand. He was the manager of the group Computational Flow and Combustion Modeling.
Since 1996, he is Professor for Energy Technology at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, at the Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering, currently leading the Center of Flow Simulation (CFS), continuously active in mathematical modelling and computational simulation of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer in a broad range of engineering applications, quite often in cooperation with industrial companies.
He authored around 200 publications in a number of fields including finite element methods in flow problems, the finite analytic method, Navier-Stokes solution techniques, the lattice Boltzmann method, turbulence modeling, combustion modeling (gaseous, liquid and solid fuels), gasification, convective and radiative heat transfer, metal flow with phase change, two-phase flows, erosion, turbomachinery, internal and external aerodynamics as well as biofluid dynamics.
Prof. Benim is the Executive Editor of Progress in Computational Fluid Dynamics – An International Journal and has editorial positions in a number of further international journals along with his organizational activities in many international conferences.
