Andrew J. Szeri is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Szeri received his B.Sc. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1984 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University in 1987 and 1988. After postdoctoral appointments at Caltech and at U.C. Santa Barbara, he joined the faculty at UC Irvine in 1991, moved to UC Berkeley in 1997, and was promoted to the rank of Professor there in 2003.
Professor Szeri teaches in the areas of fluid mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. He has won four teaching awards, including two Tau Beta Pi teaching awards at UC Berkeley.
His research is focused on the development and exploitation of mathematical insight in application areas from physics of fluids to medical devices and treatments; he works closely with a number of experimentalists and clinicians. The current areas of interest focus on solute transport: air-sea exchange of heat and mass; respiratory mechanics and gas exchange in alveoli; delivery of anti-HIV microbicides; and insulin delivery and control systems for an artificial pancreas. Recent interest has been in medical acoustics (destruction of kidney stones by shock waves, clot dissolution by high-intensity focused ultrasound, and diagnostic ultrasound contrast agents) and computational neuroscience (synchronization, sleep dynamics, optogenetics, and seizure dynamics and control). These research topics build on earlier work in nonlinear hydrodynamic stability, complex fluids, charged particle dynamics, and cavitation physics.
Professor Szeri has mentored more than 20 Ph.D. students to completion, who went on to occupy positions at national labs (LLNL, LANL), companies (LG, Apple, Tokyo Electron, SAIC), and universities (including UC Irvine, UCSD, UCSF, USC, CSU Fullerton, Boston University, University of Connecticut, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Harvard University, Olin College, Nazarbaev University, and Rutgers University). Former students have won awards such as NSF CAREER, PECASE, and the Burroughs-Wellcome Career Award at the Scientific Interface.
Professor Szeri has won several research awards, including a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, a Chaim Weizmann Research Fellowship in Applied Mechanics at Caltech, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and a Research Fellowship in physics from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany). He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
In his academic administrative appointments at UC Berkeley, Professor Szeri served two years as Associate Dean and then seven years (2007-14) as Dean of the Graduate Division, with primarily quality assurance and financial responsibilities extending to nearly 11,000 graduate students and 100+ degree programs campus-wide. For two years (2014-16) he served as Vice Provost for Strategic Academic and Facilities Planning, leading academic program review of all departments and schools at UC Berkeley, overseeing space planning, administering several interdisciplinary programs holding faculty appointments, and planning for a set of initiatives that contribute to the campus’s continued excellence while providing a firmer financial foundation. Professor Szeri also served (2011-16) as Faculty Head of the Operational Excellence Program, which successfully implemented 20+ projects reforming campus-wide administrative operational systems for email, calendar, document sharing, finance, timekeeping, procurement, data warehouse, and also made structural changes in campus administration in an effort to improve operations and contain escalating costs.
Professor Szeri’s external appointments have included service as the Board Chair of the GRE Program of the Educational Testing Service, service as a reviewer of Institutional Strategies of German universities for the Excellence Initiative on behalf of the German Science and Humanities Council, and service as a member of the Research Grants Council—which oversees research expenditures and policy matters for the major research universities of Hong Kong. He served on the editorial board of the Springer-Verlag Journal of Nonlinear Science for more than twenty years, and has completed a decade of service on the editorial board of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Among his most satisfying experiences have been several engagements as a medical volunteer with Project Angkor in Cambodia.
