个人简介
Plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for sensing and responding to changes in their environment. I investigate the circadian clock, which is a biological system that produces an estimate of the time of day. This is thought to allow cells to anticipate the daily changes in the environment that result from the rotation of the Earth. In plants, correct operation of the circadian clock is associated with a doubling of photosynthesis and productivity. Understanding the circadian clock therefore forms an important part of developing crops for sustainable and secure food production in the future. Our knowledge how the circadian clock enhances plant performance remains limited. To address this, I am performing experiments to understand the signalling pathways that allow the circadian clock to control those parts of the cell that are responsible for photosynthesis and stress responses. Currently, a main focus of my lab is investigation of the nature of the processes that connect the circadian clock with chloroplasts (Belbin et al. under review; Atkins & Dodd Curr. Op Plant Biol. 2014; Noordally et al. Science 2013). Chloroplasts are the location of photosynthesis in plant cell, and provide energy for all higher plants and all agricultural productivity.
