Byron Blomquist, a CIRES and NOAA Physical Sciences Division scientist from Boulder, Colorado, will serve as both a research scientist and principal investigator on legs 1, 4, and 6. Blomquist, whose key science focus is observations and modeling of air/sea and air/ice gas transfers, will be studying the following key science objectives during MOSAiC:

Characterizing the emission and deposition of climate active trace gases in the sea ice environment over a complete annual cycle

Identifying the physical, chemical and biological processes that influence gas exchange

Developing an improved physical gas transfer model for the Arctic sea ice environment
