Bio
Carla P. Gomes has finished a Degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2009 (University of Aveiro) and a Master's Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology in 2011 (Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra), where she worked in the identification of novel molecular targets for therapeutic gene silencing within the tumor microenvironment.
In 2012 she was awarded with an FCT fellowship (SRFH/BD/79939/2011) and pursued with her Ph.D. studies in Biomedical Engineering (University of Porto), where she contributed for the development of functionalized nanoparticles that were able to specifically deliver a therapeutic transgene (BDNF) to peripheral neurons and to promote the recovery of a crushed nerve injury mouse model by preventing nerve degeneration and enhancing nerve regeneration.
As a Post-Doctoral Researcher, in 2017 she enrolled in a collaborative project entitled "Accelerating progress toward the new era of precision medicine" at Instituto de Medicina Molecular - João Lobo Antunes, where she was dedicated to the identification of long non-coding RNAs with possible therapeutic roles in aggressive triple negative human breast cancer. Currently, she is a Junior Researcher in the Genetic Dynamics of Cancer Cells Group at IPATIMUP/i3S and her main focus is to unravel the role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in cancer immune response.
Along these 8+ years in research, she has participated in 4 Research Projects that resulted in a total of 10 publications (6 as first author) in peer-reviewed journals and 1 book chapter, together with several oral and poster communications in different international conferences. She has also participated in the supervision of 3 master dissertations and several undergraduate students.
Among her main fields of interest are Oncobiology, Cancer Immunology, Nucleic Acids Biology and Gene Therapy.
