His research interests are networks, distributed machine learning, cloud computing and AI. His Erdös number is 3. Dr. Tan has served in TPC of ACM SIGMETRICS, ACM MobiHoc, International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) and as Editor for the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials. He received the Princeton University Wu Prize for Excellence, Google Faculty Award, university teaching awards, and was selected twice for the U.S. National Academy of Engineering China-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. His research was featured in Hong Kong Research Grants Council's Research Frontiers. He has previously served as the Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Communications and as the IEEE Information Theory Society Hong Kong Chapter Chairman receiving the 2015 IT Society Chapter of the Year award.
