个人简介
His group effort was to achieve optoelectronics device integration vertically by material growth and laterally by integrated optics design and fabrication in support of Optical Networking projects and deliverables. He has led a team to design, fabricate, and characterize uncooled lasers, high-speed lasers, distributed-feedback lasers, wavelength-tunable distributed-Bragg-reflector lasers, multiwavelength distributed-feedback laser arrays, and semiconductor optical amplifiers. He has also participated in several system demonstrations using lasers and optical amplifiers, such as the subcarrier-multiplexed system, the coherent system, the wavelength-division-multiplexed system, and the Optical Network Technology Consortium (ONTC) testbed. From 1993 to 1995, he successfully led a team to develop four-wavelength and eight-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser array prototypes for the ONTC reconfigurable multiwavelength optical network testbed funded by Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA). In 1996, he was responsible for developing the eight-wavelength modulator-integrated DFB laser array prototypes for the local exchange testbed in the Multiwavelength Optical Networking Consortium also funded by ARPA. Since August 1, 1997, his group has been acquired by Corning, Inc., Corning, NY, USA, where he is currently the Research Director of Semiconductor Technologies Research. His department has participated in commercializing state-of-the-art high-power 980, 14xx nm pumps and synthetic green lasers. The recent research and development include high-power 1060-nm DBR lasers for green light generation by frequency doubling, green InGaN lasers, mid-IR quantum cascade lasers, and 1.3/1.55 μm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. He has authored or coauthored more than 115 (seven invited) journal papers and 170 (31 invited) conference papers, and holds 32 U.S. patents in the areas of optoelectronic devices and optical fiber communications.,Dr. Zah received the Bellcore Distinguished Member of Technical Staff Award in 1992 for his innovative contributions to the applications of lightwave technology to advanced fiber networks, R&D 100 Award in 1994, and LEOS Engineering Achievement Award in 2005 for his uncooled AlGaInAs lasers designed for fiber-in-the-loop applications, and another R&D 100 Award in 1996 for WDM network access modules incorporating multiwavelength DFB laser arrays. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and a member of the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society. He has served on numerous technical committees for the Asia Pacific Conference on Optical Communications (APOC), the Conference of Lasers and Electro-Optics, the European Conference on Optical Communication, the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting, Integrated Photonics Research Silicon and Nano-Photonics, the IEEE International Semiconductor Laser Conference, the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS), and Optical Fiber Communication Conference, as a Conference Chair of LEOS’2003 and APOC’2007, and as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters from 1993 to 2008 and the Journal of Lightwave Technology since 2009
