个人简介
His doctoral work focused on novel therapeutics derived from omega-3 fatty acids, for management of diabetes. His post-doctoral research at the Matrix Dynamics Group, Toronto and the Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, addressed implications of innate immunity in inflammation resolution failure associated with diabetes and periodontitis. Concurrently he completed two externships in oral surgery at Boston Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston, and a clinical residency in Periodontology at University of Toronto.
As clinician-scientist Dr. Sima is engaged in basic science, clinical and translational research, clinical instruction and practice, bridging the gap between bench and chairside activities. He is conducting studies on diagnosis and management of unresolved inflammation in periodontitis and diabetes, focusing on phagocyte functional markers of disease, high-resolution optical methods to assess periodontal status, and immune modulation therapeutics to restore the lost inflammation resolving capacity.
Dr. Sima has authored numerous publications on pathogenesis of periodontitis and diabetes, and received several awards for research excellence in the USA and Canada. He lectures nationally and internationally and serves as reviewer for specialty journals including the Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Prostaglandins and Other Lipid Mediators, among others. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
Interests
Dr. Sima’s research interests include inflammation resolution, healing and regeneration, in vivo imaging and high-resolution diagnostics, and phagocyte-targeted therapeutics. His clinical activities focus on microsurgical approaches to soft and hard tissue grafting, implant site development and management of periodontitis associated with systemic co-morbidities. He is also passionate about travelling, bicycling, hiking and photography. His favorite topics are science/philosophy and environmental protection.
