Dr. Hossain served as the Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials from 2012-2016, the Area Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (in the area of "Resource Management and Multiple Access") from 2009-2011 and an Editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Cognitive Radio Series (from 2011-2014), and IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (from 2007-2012). He was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Communications Society (2012-2015, 2019-2020) and IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (2017-2020). He was elevated to an IEEE Fellow (class of 2015) "for contributions to spectrum management and resource allocation in cognitive and cellular radio networks". In 2016, he was elected as a Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. He was an elected Member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society (2018-2020). He served as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Press (2018-2021), Director of Magazines of the IEEE Communications Society (2020-2021), and Director of Online Content of the IEEE Communications Society (2022-2023). He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Manitoba, Canada.
