Francesco Masulli is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Genova (Italy) and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine, Center for Biotechnology of the Temple University at Philadelphia (PA, USA). At the University of Genova he is Lecturer of the courses on Evolutionary Computation, Computational Intelligence, and Computer Programming. He was born in 1952 in Monte Sant'Angelo, Foggia (Italy). In 1976 received the Laurea degree in Physics (magna cum laude) from the University of Genova. After the military service he was with the INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) and from 1979 to 1982 with the Ansaldo Automazione Company. From 1983 to 2001 he has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Genova. From 2001 to 2005 he has been an Associate Professor at University of Pisa. He was also a visiting scientist at University of Nijmegen (Holland) in 1983, and at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley, California in 1991, 1993, and 1994. He is also an affiliate of the National Consortium for Physical Sciences of Matter (CNISM), Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica "Francesco Severi" and CINI - Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale di Informatica . He authored or co-autored more than 150 scientific papers in Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Fuzzy System, Pattern Recognitino, and Bioinformatics and co-edited of the books "Neural Networks in Biomedicine" (World Scientific, 1994) and "New Trends in Fuzzy Logic" (World Scientific, 1996), "Advances in fuzzy systems and Intelligent Technologies" (Shaker Publishing, 2000), "Soft Computing Applications" (Springer, 2002), Proceedings of ISICT (ACM, 2003), Fuzzy Logic and Applications (LNAI Springer, 2006), Applications of Fuzzy Sets Theory (LNAI Springer, 2007), Computational Intelligence Methods for Bioinformatics (LNBI Springer, 2009) and 7 special issues of international scientific journals. He serves as the chair of the Task Force on Neural Networks of IEEE-CIS BBCT, a co-chair of the SIG Bioinformatics of the International Neural Network Society (INNS) and as an Associate Editor the international journal "Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing" and was a co-chair of the 1993 Advanced School on Neural Networks in Biomedicine (Como, 1993) and of the WILF'95 - Italian Workshop on Fuzzy Logic (21-22 Sept 1995 - Naples, Italy), WILF'99 - Italian Workshop on Fuzzy Logic (28-29 June 1999 - Genoa, Italy), WILF'01 - Italian Workshop on Fuzzy Logic (4-5 Oct 2001 - Milan, Italy) , WILF 2003, International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications (October 2003. Naples - Italy ), and was a co-organizer of the Workshop on Soft Computing Methods for Pattern Recognition at SOCO'96, the vice-chair of SOCO'97, the chairperson of 1997 Conference of the International Graphonomics Society (IGS), the Chair of SOCO'99, Third International ICSC Symposium on Soft Computing, and a co-chair the 7th Course of the International School on Neural Networks "E.R. Caianiello" on Ensemble Methods for Learning Machines (Vietri, 2002). He served as a Program Committee member of several workshops and conferences. He is a founder and board member of the SIG Italy of the International Neural Network Society (INNS), and of the Workgroup Italiano sulla Logica Fuzzy (WILF) and former board member of International Graphomomics Society (IGS) (term 1994-1999). He is a senior member of IEEE, IEEE-CIS (Italian Chapter), and an affiliate member of the Berkeley Initiative on Soft Computing (BISC).
