Frank De Hoog

Frank de Hoog received the Ph.D. degree in mathematics from Australian National University (ANU), Canberra ACT, Australia, in 1973. He is currently a Post Retirement Fellow with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Canberra ACT, Australia. He is a Mathematical Scientist with more than 40 years research and teaching experience. He has lectured at the University of California at Los Angeles, USA, and ANU on Computational and Applied Mathematics and has made a number of research contributions in these areas. Specifically, he has contributed to topics in the numerical solution of differential and integral equations, numerical transform techniques, computational linear algebra, solid mechanics, vibration of structures, stress analysis, heat and mass transfer, and rheology. These have been documented in more than 100 refereed journal papers and conference proceedings. A key feature of his work is that it has involved extensive collaboration with colleagues at ANU, Latrobe University, Geologics, BHP, Comalco, Bluescope Steel, James Hardie, University of Wisconsin, California Institute of Technology, Wilfrid Laurier University, TU Eindhoven, and TU Vienna. He also has further extensive research links in Australia, North America, and Europe. Since 1977, he has worked closely with many industrial collegues on industrial problems, mainly in the areas of mineral and industrial processing. Specifically, he has worked on modeling of blast furnaces, gravity separation, alumina precipitation, mill modeling, roll coating, structural vibrations, coil handling, and financial risk. As part of this work, he has undertaken a number of short term secondments to industry.
